The overrepresentation of Dutch juveniles with a migration background and/or a weaker socio-economic status among people suspected and convicted of crimes cannot be fully explained by group differences in criminal behaviour. To better understand and monitor these social inequalities and their effects on criminal careers, we develop new statistical techniques. In addition, we develop and test behavioral interventions for and with youth and police officers in Rotterdam to increase mutual trust and reduce problematic inequalities in the sanctioning of delinquent behaviour. We also identify starting points for additional interventions and relevant reforms in and around the Dutch criminal justice system.
