5 COUNTRIES 1 RIVER

Description

"The implementation of the European Union's Water Framework Directive is being compromised by rivers that know no borders (appx.12). In Ukraine, 400 million tons of household waste is mistreated every year, in Transcarpathia landfills are set up right by the coastlines (appx.3-4). In the event of a flood, the communal waste is swept away by the river and carried through the EU borders. Currently the river Tisza is one of the most heavily polluted rivers of the EU, which, according to the Hungarian Water Authorities, brings more than 500 bottles per minute from Ukraine and Romania during major floods (appx.5 / page 11). Plastic is deposited into the floodplains or closes the riverbed as a barrier (appx.6), endangering drinking water supplies, wildlife, and posing a major threat to the local communities, tourism and other sectors (appx. 7-8).The 5 COUNTRIES 1 RIVER (5in1) project implements constructive cooperation between the countries sharing the Tisza River Basin - Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia. The project develops effective education and training activities based on best practices available (appx.20). It mobilizes young schoolchildren (aged 6-18) living in contaminated areas, and supports educators who deal with them with gap-filling professional knowledge and support. It is quite pressing to start the 5in1 project, because the children living in the source regions of the Tisza have not yet seen a clean river in their entire lives. In fact, they are often the ones who have to take household waste to the river (appx.54). 5in1 offers an attractive alternative to river pollution by bringing in educators who were lucky enough to see clear waters when they were young. The 5in1 project is implemented with the help of non governmental organizations, companies and educational institutions, with a total of 10 partners responsible for the development of intellectual outputs from 5 countries. The list of intellectual outputs produced in the framework of the project include online educational supplementary materials (eg River Rescue Handbook, Waste Resurrection Guide), smartphone applications (an application for waste mapping and river clean-up actions), and educational videos supplementing educational work. All intellectual outputs will be produced in 6 language versions (Hungarian, English, Ukrainian, Romanian, Slovakian, Serbian). The 5in1 project draws attention to the communal waste released into the environment, the possibilities of its removal and recycling. It develops key competencies through experience-focused, creative sessions and contributes to the start of organized waste management in the Tisza source region. The project will achieve a spectacular and long-term sustainable improvement in each partner country on a well-defined river-section (River Section Adoption). 5in1 provides an opportunity for all participants to have the opportunity to travel internationally, to experience European values, diversity and internationality at least once. The project places particular emphasis on the development of digital competencies, the deepening of media literacy, and the use of innovative data recording technologies. The 5in1 project gives everyone interested in the opportunity to join local programs and take active action, make the most of the potential of waste as a secondary raw material and create unique objects from them. In recognition of their outstanding performance, some project participants will win the titles of """"River Rescuer"""", encouraging further work. Educators test the intellectual outputs developed jointly by the project partners in practice, implement river cleaning and awareness-raising events. Traditional communication channels (bulletin board, poster, amateur video) are complemented by methods suitable for attracting the attention of the general public (interviews, educational videos, press releases, providing journalists with photos, videos and text for publication). Schools, well active in the project and producing measurable results, will be awarded the title of """"River Rescue School"""". At local and regional level, new ways of collecting and treating waste will emerge, less waste is going to be discharged into the river, pollution will disappear from adopted section of the river, and the population's relationship with the river and waste will change. Thanks to its intellectual outouts, the 5in1 project will have an impact not only locally but also regionally and internationally."
