""" An Odyssey to European UNESCO Cultural Heritage Monuments"""

Description

"“It goes on being Alexandria still. Just walk a bit along the straight road that ends at the Hippodrome and you'll see palaces and monuments that will amaze you. Whatever war-damage it's suffered, however much smaller it's become, it's still a wonderful city...."" This poem of Constantine Cavafy inspired us to start this""odyssey"" which is related to Cultural Heritage and it is about UNESCO World Gultural Heritage monuments and cultural heritage monuments which need protection and preservation, are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity and whose conservation is important for current and future generations. As 2018 was the European Year of Cultural Heritage, cultural heritage was to be understood, cherished and celebrated, therefore students of six partner schools from Greece, Italy, Turkey, Portugal, Spain and Estonia decided to become guardians of this heritage for the next generations and this educational value of cultural heritage was emphasized in this project, as was its contribution to sustainable economic and social development. The two- year project was carried out by 108 students aged 16-17 who proposed these monuments to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List by exchanging expertise and good practice after attending seminars, online courses and their creativity and skills linking culture with the multi-cultural and socio-economic dimensions of European societies nowadays. This was achieved by students’ constructing a website, producing 3D Reconstructions, GIS, videos, brochures of the proposing monuments, puzzles of the monuments, collaborative drama performances and concerts giving life to the monuments, educational trips to the UNESCO World Cultural monuments and the proposed monuments of each partners’ region so as students investigated which criteria were of outstanding value for their proposals, preparing the proposal plans with the assistance of the local authorities and their National UNESCO offices. An Educational kit was produced with all the materials created by students and learners which will be distributed in local and school libraries, UNESCO National offices, local authorities .It is also in digital form which can be replied easily and cost free and can distributed on local authorities',ASP school projects' websites, eTwinning platform and Erasmus+ Project Results Platform. All the meetings and the activitieswere designed to serve the effectiveness of the project and the pursuing of its general objectives. It offeedr high quality, academically sound education to a European student body in a supportive and understanding environment, promoted a positive attitude towards creativity, allowing students to actively engage in the learning process, encouraged cultural understanding, tolerance and the enjoyment of diversity, developed students' self-esteem and a sense of respect for others and addressed the need for ongoing staff and curriculum development. This projec twas an exciting trip to preserved cultural heritage monuments starting from Troy in Turkey via Filippi in Greece, Alberobello in Italy, Universidad de Alcalá in Spain, Bom Jesus do Monte in Portugal, ending in Northern Europe in Hermann Castle in Estonia following a parallel route to monuments of outstanding importance in these European regions, the villages of Gokceada, Ancient Avdera, San Martino church, Sete Fontes,The Infantado Palace and the Castle of Narva, which need protection and preservation."
