Continuation project of CONNECTA-2 (GA 826098) which targets the high TRL deployment and validation in two relevant laboratory demonstrators and field tests for urban and regional scenarios of the following technologies: - Wireless TCMS, including wireless train backbone, wireless consist network and standardized train-to-ground according to IEC 61375-2-6. - NG-TCN including high safe (SIL4) communication networks to support the drive-by-data concept, including brake-by-wire. - Functional Open Coupling (FOC) - Functional Distribution Framework (FDF) instantiated with two different approaches (modified AUTOSAR and selfimplemented on top of specific operating system), together with relevant application profiles. - The virtual certification simulatiom framework, with hardware-in-the-loop and remote connectivity to subsystems The goal is to reach TRL6/7 in most developments.

This proposal has been developed as the last phase of the work which will be developed within the Technical Demonstrators Traction (TD1.1) and HVAC (TD1.8) during the implementation of Shift2Rail. It takes place after PINTA2 and PIVOT-2. The ultimate goals of TD Traction and TD HVAC are, from one side to bring to the market a new generation of traction drive equipment and, on the other side, to develop Green house gases free HVAC. The proposal PINTA3 addresses the topic S2R-CFM-IP1-01-2020 Demonstrators for the next generation of traction systems including Silicon Carbide semi-conductor based Tractions systems demonstrations on trains, wheel-motor demonstration on High Speed Train, smart maintenance, virtual validation and eco-friendly Heating, Ventilation Air conditioning and Cooling (HVAC) and research on battery and hydrogen powered regional trains. This proposal has been developed to tackle the three main challenges related to Traction systems , HVAC and future decarbonised trains highlighted in the Call text: master technology breakthroughs, contributions to the implementation of new methodologies, tools, norms and standards, demonstrate environment friendly HVAC and improve the Shift2Rail Key Performance Indicators like Life Cycle Cost and reliability. PINTA3 will continue and extend the development of the work, mainly in terms of manufacturing and validation of the prototypes solutions on trains (up to TRL7), which has been initiated within PINTA2 and PIVOT-2. The same as PINTA2 high quality and experienced project coordination and management with defined roles will ensure the successful timely deliveries. This proposal addresses the topic S2R-CFM-IP1-01-2020 on Traction and HVAC.

The PINTA2 Project (IP1 Traction TD1 and Brakes TD5 – Phase 2) will address the two key topics highlighted in the Shift2Rail Call topic S2R-CFM-IP1-01-2018 – Development of concepts towards the next generation of traction systems and management of wheel/rail adhesion, namely Traction and Adhesion Management. PINTA2 will continue, fully in line with PINTA Phase1, to work on Traction & Adhesion improvements of seven technical and economical KPIs of the Traction system that have been agreed and defined in PINTA (fully in line with S2R KPIs). These performances will be improved on five different train applications having different constraints, needs and specificities, from tramway to HST, including metro, sub-urban, regional trains. In particular, Traction sub-project will address the following KPIs: 1) Line capacity increase through weight, volume and noise savings of Traction equipment. 2) Reduction of Maintenance costs via higher reliability/availability and optimized for maintenance Traction components. 3) Railway system LCC reduction via higher energy efficiency and optimized capital cost of the Traction systems. On Brakes Adhesion side, the work will lead to the achievement of a number of important objectives such as · higherTRL levels of improvement of braking degradation limit in poor adhesion condition · Management of all adhesion conditions in a way that brake distances are optimized · Improvement of the overall train safety, which relies substantially on the management of the wheel/rail contact · Reduction of wheel Life-Cycle-Costs (LCCs) through optimized wheel/rail contact in braking The activities will contribute in developing new performance solutions for Adhesion. The work done in PINTA2 will consist in higher achievement ( up to TRL6) to prepare the final Phase3 work and future TRL7 demonstration on trains, at least Metro, Regional and HST expected around 2021-22.

PIVOT2 is a continuation of the PIVOT project which was scheduled to finish in September 2019. PIVOT2 will build on the work and concepts of PIVOT and move all of these concepts to higher TRL levels. The overall ambition of PIVOT2 is to develop technologies that are lighter, more energy efficient, more comfortable for passengers and with a lower impact on the track, thereby reducing the life cycle cost not only of the vehicle itself, but of the entire railway system. Technologies that increase the operational reliability of trains, causing less travel disruptions, ensuring that passengers get to destination on time and delivering a better service are also objectives. It is expected that technologies developed should automatically promote the increase of the transport capacity of railway lines. The ambitions of Shift2Rail, which are inherited by PIVOT2, require substantial ground-breaking improvements in the six key technology areas addressed by the project. Indeed, current vehicle solutions are getting closer to their enhancement limits and new radical proposals must be envisaged to accomplish the goals. PIVOT2 will be dealing with the same five key technical demonstrator (TD) areas that were advanced in PIVOT, these are Car body shell, Running gear, Brakes, Accessibility and Doors and Modular Interiors. Within these areas the results are expected to achieve a TRL 7. A new TD for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) has been added which should achieve a TRL 4.
