Future sustainable mobility is not simply a transport challenge, but requires new combinations between mobility patterns, energy generation, and forms of housing. This project develops new visions with citizens and stakeholders from the transport, energy, and housing sectors as well as concrete templates on how to realize such integrated systems technically and organizationally.

The exploitation of resources in marine areas beyond the control of any single country poses serious threats to the health of the ocean and unleashes potentials for complex and unconventional conflicts amongst different actors. This project investigates how international legal institutions can and should resolve disputes arising from profit-oriented activities in areas beyond national jurisdiction in the interests of equity, justice and sustainability.

In the Netherlands, discrimination often occurs not only openly, but also hidden in systems, rules and policies. This affects society as a whole. However, current anti-discrimination laws mainly focus on individual cases and do not sufficiently address underlying causes. This research examines how Dutch equality legislation can be reshaped to better combat structural discrimination. The researchers clarify legal concepts, study experiences from other countries, and explicitly involve communities that experience discrimination and policymakers. The result is scientifically well-founded and at the same time concrete suggestions on how the legislation can be revised.

EU policymakers increasingly leverage state ownership of companies to accelerate meeting sustainability objectives. This project assesses how the EU legal framework can optimize the potential of state ownership in sustainability policy, while mitigating adverse effects on competition, rule of law and geopolitics. This research critically examines a promising idea, with a potentially ground-breaking impact on the success of sustainability efforts in the EU and beyond. However, the complex nature of both sustainability goals and the EU legal framework require scoping into a coherent research agenda, and a multidisciplinary consortium to execute this agenda.

Rural-urban regions feel an increasing need for landscape services such as clean drinking water, recreational space and space for living and working. While these demands are greatest in cities, the potential to provide these services is greatest in rural areas. It is possible to manage this - under the right preconditions - but it does require spatial interventions, strong policies and the financial-organizational matching of supply and demand. Landscape services can thus form the necessary extra link in the transformation towards sustainability, contributing to a more beautiful landscape and fertile soils for current and future generations.
