The project will design and implement an undergraduate study programme in permaculture, which will be automatically certified through ECTS credits (4 to 6 ECTS will be granted through the module depending on the university). This module will be taught in several faculties such as agriculture, horticulture, bioscience engineering, and agronomic sciences.Permaculture is a set of principles that integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies. It aims to imitate and recreate natural ecosystems through the use of closed-loop and no waste techniques. It has gained increasing visibility in front of a growing environmental threat and deterioration of ecosystems. Indeed, permaculture is a good alternative to intensive agriculture, which generally results in high productivity but most often at the expense of biodiversity. However, there is a gap in higher education modules exclusively dedicated to permaculture. Fostering the implementation of permaculture principles at a wider level would have significant environmental benefits as it would participate to a more sustainable management of land and thus address societal and environmental needs. The primary target group is composed of University students at an undergraduate level in 4 EU countries (Italy, Malta, Romania and Belgium).Through innovative pedagogies, the module shall train undergraduate students in permaculture with specific skills in environment sustainable design, which is the fact of designing objects, building environments and services compliant with the principles of ecological sustainability. Learning environment sustainable design will help participating students developing their entrepreneurship skills in the context of achieving the development of a more circular and green economy. Additionally, the students will also develop theoretical and practical knowledge on permaculture such as field diagnosis, permaculture principles, or design methods for example. The project will deliver 3 intellectual outputs:- Teacher’s coursebook on permaculture;- Student handbook;- Online platform. After the first year of the project the Master programme will be implemented inside the four partner universities in Belgium, Italy, Malta and Romania. A total of 120 students and 10-15 professors will be involved. Two Intensive Study Programmes will be organized in Italy and Romania, with the participation of 4 groups composed of 5 students + 1 professor per university. Through the involvement of experts from the 2 scientific partners, the students will acquire soft skills working in a multicultural environment and will work inside permacultural farms.
