The main approach to achieve the proposed targets will be to focus on innovative concepts and manufacturing technologies such as liquid resin transfer molding (RTM) and thermoplastics compression molding processes. In this sense there have been a lot of researches carried out in recent years and still nowadays on-going are proving the technical feasibility of resin transfer molding and thermoplastic material-based processes to manufacture structural aeronautical components, but they need to be up-scaled at industrial level, upon checking the technical, economic and environmental impact in real productive conditions. One step forward, specific for frames for regional aircraft COFRARE 2.0, in the project several studies are being carried out

The Airframe ITD aims at re-thinking and developing the technologies as building blocks and the “solution space” on the level of the entire or holistic aircraft: pushing aerodynamics across new frontiers, combining and integrating new materials and structural techniques – and integrating innovative new controls and propulsion architectures with the airframe; and optimizing this against the challenges of weight, cost, life-cycle impact and durability.

The Regional Aircraft IADP will bring the integration of technologies developed in phase one within the Green Regional Aircraft ITD to a higher level of complexity and maturity via two flying test-beds and three large integrated ground demonstrators. The overall goal of the TOD project is to demonstrate rapid manufacturability and validation of a full scale thermoplastic composite door including its surrounding, sub-structure for regional aircraft fuselage barrel. This will be achieved by a tangible step beyond the current state of the art of several thermoplastic manufacturing technologies, some of which are already implemented in other certified aircraft parts. 3 reputable European partners, with a very well-known track-record in their respectively area of expertise, aim to use their background to address the objectives set out in this project. The proposed approach include: • Optimisation and validation of component manufacturing using thermoforming and, joining processes such as, Induction Welding and Resistive Implant Welding, which will enable light weighting by removal of mechanical fasteners. • Take advantage of technology advancement in industry 4.0 automation and on-line monitoring to support higher production rate with high quality performances ( Zero defect) and roubust control.

MATRIX Project intend to support the economic matter of the airworthiness certification for composite SLP structures in FAR 25, developing an OPTIMIZED approach to analyse, test and validate a large numbers of innovative materials suitable for HECOLAG purpose. MATRIX output will be a SMART TOOL to streamline the standard Building Block Approach of composite material with a limited number of phisical tests at flat coupons level (L1), simple shape elements (L2) and detailed complex shape (L3).
