New products are often developed out of a logic of makeability, with limited attention for critical reflection on their social consequences. We therefore need a new creative practice that combines the critical reflection that is central to artistic research with the technology-driven culture of making. To this end, we propose to appropriate the concept of Critical Making. Coined by Canadian designer Matt Ratto in 2008 and laid out in a series of MIT Press books, this concept has so far been closely tied to FabLabs and artists media labs, while articulating a more critical position within the overall Maker movement. In our project, Critical Making will be researched and developed further in the context of critical theory and the discourse of artistic research in order to address creative practices in which art, design and technology fundamentally and practically intersect. The ultimate objective is to develop products and services that are not only "smart" by label, but truly "smart" in respect to the critical reflection that went into their making. Therefore, our main research question is: How can the concept of Critical Making be expanded into a general approach that ties the critical methodology of artistic research, and the established concepts of artistic autonomy, together with contemporary creative-technological development?

The question articulation consisted of 26 interviews and 8 focus groups, in the context of a KIEM subsidy project. The preliminary research shows that smaller SMEs, companies with 10-50 employees, are vulnerable to decline: the issues of the day reigns and there is little capacity to change the beacons. This is a structural problem, as the corona crisis makes it more acute.

In the medical sector new therapeutic approaches are greatly needed, especially for diseases with an unmet medical need like infectious diseases with antibiotic resistance and bone metastatic cancer. Solutions may come from plant-derived compounds as potential therapeutics. In this research project the Dutch Extract Library will therefore be screened for plant compounds with antimicrobial- and/or anticancer properties in model systems developed for these diseases. Goal is to develop knowledge and innovative technology to provide Biobased products and new revenue models.

The outflow of students and new-graduates is a major problem, which is partly caused by health problems resulting from the demanding profession. In a collaboration between Rotterdam University of Applied Science, Codarts, NHL-Stenden University of Applied Science, UMCG, Hanze University of Applied Science and Gilde, we will develop an educational programme aimed at improving vitality. With a design-approach together with students and practice, we build a monitor-feedback application embedded in education to remain vital as a nurse. To learn from each other, we organize a national learning network.
