With [Pegasus]², the Research foundation Flanders (FWO) aims to enhance human capital in fundamental research in all scientific domains by attracting more excellent researchers to Flanders via the incoming fellowships, as well as by bestowing researchers in Flanders with increased international experience via the outgoing fellowships. This brain circulation through international and intersectoral mobility will not only foster excellence in the researcher’s training and career development, it will also contribute to dissolving regional and (inter)national boundaries and bring the European Research Area nearer to completion. Based on the success of the previous cofunded programme and the lessons learned from its execution and external evaluation, [PEGASUS]² is a deepened and extended programme including two fellowship schemes for experienced researchers: (1) 3-year incoming fellowships and (2) 3-year outgoing fellowships composed of two years of research abroad and one return year to the fellow’s host institution, in order to reintegrate into a long term position. Candidates can be of any nationality and active in any scientific discipline. In line with the European Charter and Code, the FWO is committed to fair and transparent recruitment and appraisal procedures, safeguarding the excellence and attractiveness of Flemish research in particular and of the ERA more generally. Fellows will be offered attractive employment conditions including a bench fee on top of the living and mobility allowance. By providing support and training all within an optimal research environment and enjoying the best working conditions, [Pegasus]² offers experienced researchers a unique opportunity to boost their research career through international and intersectoral mobility.

Systems medicine is a new approach which integrates biological and medical data with mathematical and computational modelling in order to understand the underlying mechanisms of disease and to develop new strategies for individualised diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Systems medicine can fill the gap between experimental data produced by modern technologies and medical knowledge. Through the implementation of systems biology approaches in both clinical research and medical practice systems medicine will provide a new tool to clinicians that will change the capabilities of the clinician to diagnose and treat patients faster, better and more effectively – a tool, which has the potential to become a generic prerequisite for any personalized or P4 medicine approach. The central idea of ERACoSysMed is to implement systems biology approaches in medical concepts, research and practice by structuring, coordinating and integrating national efforts and investments during its project duration of five years. To achive this main goal the specific objectives of ERACoSysMed are: 1) Strengthen the systems medicine community both across national borders as well as across specific research areas 2) Establish a network of funding bodies to sustainably implement systems medicine across Europe 3) Launch joint trans-national research calls with the aim to push forward the desired paradigm shift towards P4 medicine 4) Provide a platform for the implementation of the actions recommended by the CASyM road map For this aim Joint transnational calls (JTCs) for research proposals will be implemented. As a first step a co-funded JTC call will be launched with the aim to select transnational research projects in a competitive approach that shall demonstrate the social and economic benefit of the systems medicine approach. The consortium intends to implement further JTCs and other networking activities in order to keep alive the momentum which will be created by the co-funded JTC.

The Transformations to Sustainability (T2S) ERA-NET Cofund programme will be implemented in the context of a Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action in cooperation with the NORFACE (New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe) network and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). A comprehensive and concerted research initiative is needed that can boost research on transformations to sustainability, that can catalyse new kinds of solutions to environmental and social challenges. This T2S programme therefore seeks to bring into being and nurture integrated teams of scientists from relevant academic disciplines including, as appropriate, social, natural, human, natural, engineering, agricultural and health/medical sciences disciplines and societal stakeholders to produce new knowledge and perspectives that can contribute to finding equitable and durable solutions to the challenges of sustainability in specific contexts, in support of the Sustainable Development Goals. This programme will contribute to re-structuring the broad field of sustainability research to place social science at the heart of interdisciplinary efforts and will contribute to a step change in scale and scope for research programming on this topic. This future-oriented call will be jointly undertaken by major funding agencies in Europa, the United States, Brazil, Taiwan and Japan. The T2S programme will coordinate the research efforts of the participating Member States and international partners by implementing a joint trans-national call with European Commission co-funding to fund innovative comparative, transnational and interdisciplinary research initiatives within this thematic field. The T2S partners will pursue the expansion of their present effective collaboration and actively strive at widening the consortium.
