The enhancement of Gross National Happiness (GNH) has been the most significant national priority for Bhutan since the 1980s, and it has evolved into the guiding purpose of Bhutan’s development. To increase GNH and support sustainable development, knowledge is needed to deepen the understanding of real life at each societal level. Qualitative research data have been recognized as critically important to contribute to evidence-based policies which address social and developmental challenges. There is however a disjuncture between the desire for qualitative research data and the absence of knowledge, skills and technical infrastructure to teach qualitative research methods. The HAPPY Project aims to include innovative Qualitative Research teaching approaches in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities at 4 Colleges in Bhutan. We thus aim to modernize and renew existing curricula by developing innovative modules for existing courses and enhance the competencies of academics in qualitative research methods (QRM). The HAPPY Project uses a people centered approach to co-create innovative teaching methodologies and accentuates “learning by doing”. The implementation of the renewed curricula will contribute to the development of students’ transversal skills which will increase their employability. To accomplish all of the above and increase its societal impact, the HAPPY Project aims to sensitize stakeholders both in HEIs and society regarding the value and the potential of using QR data. This will strengthen the existing relationships between HEIs and societal stakeholders, including Civil Society, government, local communities, industry and enterprises. This in turn will create a space to explore further QR collaboration in the future. By disseminating project milestones to societal stakeholders, the project will initiate the use of QR data in domains beyond HEI. The HAPPY project has the potential to enhance well-being, and thus GNH.

The FRIENDS project supports PC HEIs’ internationalisation capabilities and campus diversity. The project’s chief goal is to develop PC HEIs students’ global competence through the integration of intercultural dimensions into universities’ formal and informal curriculum. The project is built around the concept of internationalisation at home (IaH) that shifts HEIs’ focus of attention from outbound to virtual mobility and on-campus intercultural engagement for the benefits of non-mobile students’ employability and global outlook. The consortium combines the expertise of 4 Eastern European PrC HEIs in BG, HU, PL and TR, as well 12 PC HEIs from Asia, namely 2 in BT, 2 in KH, 2 in MY, 3 in PH and 3 in TH. The following key results will be achieved through FRIENDS:1. Institutional IaH Action Plans adopted to streamline PC HEIs’ initiatives for IaH and to improve PC HEIs IROs staff and faculty’s capacities for internationalisation.2. Intercultural Passport virtual module designed and embedded into PC HEIs' elective curriculum to build students intercultural knowledge and sensitivity to cultural diversity. The Intercultural Passport is an innovative tool that combines virtual mobility and methodologies for validation of prior experiential learning evidenced through the means of digital storytelling. At least 180 PC HEIs students will be awarded an Intercultural Passport at FRIENDS initial phase.3. FRIENDS Teahouse social spaces established at 12 PC HEIs to function as student-friendly multicultural hubs that welcome diversity, and support the welfare of students with diverse cultural backgrounds. In addition, FRIENDS Teahouses will contribute to the improvement of overall university experience of PC HEIs’ students across campus.4. Home away from Home Programme induced as a model for integrated international student care and services. In the long run, the programme will contribute to the gradual increase of international and inbound students at the PC HEIs.

Bhutan, Nepal & Laos are facing key social problems in their development stages such as economic disparities, educational gaps & university graduates´ unemployment. All these facts hinder the countries´ development. To combat these challenges entrepreneurship (ENT) is rising in importance. Therefore, the development of a robust ecosystem for ENT on HEI campuses & beyond academic borders to foster university business cooperation is key of sustainable growth. Despite this wave of innovation, there is a lack in really disruptive & professionally developed ideas that create sustainable, yet profitable businesses to benefit the whole population. HEIs need to update their physical infrastructure &upgrading&professionalizing of teaching capacities to be able to react to current educational trends & to develop future change makers. ENCORE aims to create awareness of the concept of ENT education & development to promote innovation in HEIs in Bhutan, Nepal & Laos by integrating advanced learning tools for the creation of disruptive business ideas into existing academic structures, while strengthening the university-business collaboration through participatory schemes on a local & regional level. Results & impact envisioned:• Strengthened teaching staff capacities & student skill sets through innovative teaching & learning methodologies by offering ENT trainings • Modernized technical infrastructure of HEIs by creating, equipping & putting in operation Entrepreneurship Knowledge Centers• Enhanced HEI-Enterprise cooperation & students learning experience by developing ENT Case studies, to prepare students for innovative thinking in “real life” contexts• Greater awareness & reach of high-quality training material & publications by providing access to Open Educational Resources to regional & international academic community• Extended intern. networks in ENT education & innovation in national & intern. HE contexts by joint publications & organising the intern. conference.
