    Scandium (Sc) has various technological applications, but the concentrations of Sc in ores are low. Both, the mining of low concentrated Sc and the production of industrial-grade Sc are a heavy burden on the environment. Bauxite residue (BR) from alumina production represents one of the major sources of Sc in Europe (Ochsenkühn-Petropulu et al., 1994). The goal of this study is to assess the environmental impacts from cradle to gate of a novel production route developed in the Scandium Aluminium Europe project (SCALE) to extract Sc at concentrations <100 ppm from BR, to concentrate and upgrade it to pure ScF3 and Sc2O3 and ultimately to refine it to an aluminium scandium master alloy with 2 % Sc mass fraction (AlSc2 %). Results show that the global warming potential (GWP), measured in CO2-eq per kg Sc2O3, generated with the novel route is about half the GWP of the state-of-the-art Sc2O3 production from rare earth tailings when applying equal allocation principles. The initial process step to dissolve BR and extract Sc consumes elevated amounts of acid and energy and is responsible for at least 80 % of the route's total environmental impact. The amount of the generated filter cake (FC) is equal to the amount of the BR input and is a potential resource for cement clinker production. The ecotoxicological study indicates that both FC and BR are slightly ecotoxic.

    Air pollutants, especially PM2.5 and NO2, are associated with adverse health impacts, as shown by numerous epidemiological studies. In these studies, the observed health impacts have been correlated with ambient concentrations, mainly taken from air pollution monitoring stations. However, individuals are harmed by the pollutants in the inhaled air at the places where they stay, and thus, the concentration of pollutants in the inhaled air is obviously a better indicator for health impacts than the ambient concentration at a monitoring station. Furthermore, the current method for estimating the occurrence of chronic diseases uses annual average concentrations as indicator. However, according to current hypotheses, chronic diseases, especially chronic mortality, develop through the exposure to pollutants over many years, maybe up to a full lifetime. Thus in this study, a methodology and a computer-aided probabilistic model system are described for calculating the exposure of a person to PM2.5 and NO2 over the whole lifetime where the person is characterized by attributes such as age, gender, place of residence and work as well as socioeconomic status. The model system contains a “life course trajectory model”, which estimates the course of the education and professional development for the past lifetime of a person, whose present socioeconomic status is known. Furthermore, a “time-activity model” estimates at which places (so-called micro-environments) a person with a certain socioeconomic status stayed and how long he stayed there within a certain year. The concentrations of air pollutants in indoor environments are calculated with a “mass-balance model”, the outdoor concentrations with “atmospheric models”. Finally, the results of these models are combined to estimate the annual average exposure for the life years of individuals and population subgroups. The exposure is then used to estimate and monetize health impacts. The exposures and health impacts for a number of population subgroups in Europe are presented. For instance, a European citizen, who was 70 years old in 2015, has been exposed to around 25 μg/m3 of PM2.5 during his lifetime above the age of 30, which is associated with a reduction of life expectancy of 13.4 days per year of exposure above 30. Xylem-limited bacterial pathogens cause some of the most destructive plant diseases. Though imposed measures to control these pathogens are generally ineffective, even among susceptible taxa, some hosts can limit bacterial loads and symptom expression. Mechanisms by which this resistance is achieved are poorly understood. In particular, it is still unknown how differences in vascular structure may influence biofilm growth and spread within a host. To address this, we developed a novel theoretical framework to describe biofilm behaviour within xylem vessels, adopting a polymer-based modelling approach. We then parameterised the model to investigate the relevance of xylem vessel diameters on Xylella fastidiosa resistance among olive cultivars. The functionality of all vessels was severely reduced under infection, with hydraulic flow reductions of 2–3 orders of magnitude. However, results suggest wider vessels act as biofilm incubators; allowing biofilms to develop over a long time while still transporting them through the vasculature. By contrast, thinner vessels become blocked much earlier, limiting biofilm spread. Using experimental data on vessel diameter distributions, we were able to determine that a mechanism of resistance in the olive cultivar Leccino is a relatively low abundance of the widest vessels, limiting X. fastidiosa spread.

    Global agricultural systems are increasingly moving towards organic farming to satisfy consumers’ increased environmental awareness. Yet, shortage of fertilizers and more frequent water stresses are challenging agricultural systems to minimize their environmental impact without compromising productivity and economic sustainability. This study discusses how greenhouse organic tomato production behaves when multiple eco-sustainable solutions are applied. In particular, organic tomato cultivation was supported by a specific biostimulant treatment that included a microbial solution, based on Rhizobium, which was distributed onto faba bean seeds; once a suitable fava bean biomass had been obtained, the plants were chopped and incorporated into the soil in order to release nitrogen. In the trials considered, microbial solutions reduced organic tomato production costs by 5 %. Considering that fertilization accounted for up to 7 % of total production costs, a large-scale preparation of the microbial solution could trigger significant economic savings. The Life-Cycle Assessment shows that organic tomatoes, with a lower yield, have a lower environmental impact than conventional production only for 7 of the 15 evaluated impact categories. Combined agro-technical growing solutions are economically viable in the presence of yields in organic compared to conventional, and their environmental impact is attractive in both scenarios.

    AbstractExtraction of hemicelluloses from biomass with pressurized hot‐water employs the mechanism of autohydrolysis for molecular weight reduction. In a pilot‐scale extraction of depectinized apple pomace, molecular weight was 30 kDa with a broad mass distribution including monomers and their degradation products. Ultrafiltration with sequential use of ceramic membranes with decreasing cut‐off yielded a suitable fraction with molecular weight of 9 kDa representing 10 % of the extracted hemicelluloses. Further autohydrolytic treatment of the extracted hemicellulose decreases molecular weight while increasing the mass of degradation products. For a series of hydrolysates sequential filtration through ceramic membranes was further tested for fractionation and purification. The efficiency of this fractionation was analyzed by size exclusion chromatography and a total mass balance of the ultrafiltration process is given as an evaluation for suitability of purifying and fraction glycans.

Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Author(s) The versatile capacity of purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) for producing valuable bioproducts has gathered renewed interest in the field of resource recovery and waste valorisation. However, greater knowledge regarding the viability of applying PPB technologies in outdoor, large-scale systems is required. This study assessed, for the first time, the upscaling of the phototrophic polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production technology in a pilot-scale system operated in outdoor conditions. An integrated system composed of two up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors (for fermentation of wastewater with molasses), and two high-rate algal ponds retrofitted into PPB ponds, was operated in a wastewater treatment plant under outdoor conditions. UASB's adaptation to the outdoor temperatures involved testing different operational settings, namely hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 48 and 72 h, and molasses fermentation in one or two UASBs. Results have shown that the fermentation of molasses in both UASBs with an increased HRT of 72 h was able to ensure a suitable operation during colder conditions, achieving 3.83 ± 0.63 g CODFermentative Products/L, compared to the 3.73 ± 0.85 g CODFermentative Products/L achieved during warmer conditions (molasses fermentation in one UASB; HRT 48 h). Furthermore, the PPB ponds were operated under a light-feast/dark-aerated-famine strategy and fed with the fermented wastewater and molasses from the two UASBs. The best PHA production was obtained during the summer of 2018 and spring of 2019, attaining 34.7 % gPHA/gVSS with a productivity of 0.11 gPHA L−1 day−1 and 36 % gPHA/gVSS with a productivity of 0.14 gPHA L−1 day−1, respectively. Overall, this study showcases the first translation of phototrophic PHA production technology from an artificially illuminated laboratory scale system into a naturally illuminated, outdoor, pilot-scale system. It also addresses relevant process integration aspects with UASBs for pre-fermenting wastewater with molasses, providing a novel operational strategy to achieve photosynthetic PHA production in outdoor full-scale systems. publishersversion published

    The centrifugal particle receiver (CentRec®) developed by DLR for high-temperature solar applications, previously tested on sun in a 500 kWth prototype at the solar tower in Jülich was further developed and tested at slightly smaller scale of 300 kWth. The test with artificial sunlight provided more stationary and controllable boundary conditions. Outlet temperature of 681 °C was reached at an irradiating input power of 214 kW. The performance was determined with particle mass flow and temperature measurement systems. The data confirms the thermodynamic model for this receiver, indicating an extrapolated performance of 81% at nominal conditions.

    AbstractIn the 1960s, influential thinkers defined design as a rational problem-solving approach to deal with the challenges of sustainable human development. In 2009, a design consultant and a business academic selected some of these ideas and successfully branded them with the term “design thinking.” As a result, design thinking has developed into a stream of innovation management research discussing how to innovate faster and better in competitive markets. This article aims to foster a reconsideration of the purposes of design thinking moving forward, in view of the sustainable development challenges intertwined with accelerating innovation in a perpetual economic growth paradigm. To this end, we use a problematization method to challenge innovation management research on design thinking. As part of this method, we first systematically collect and critically analyze the articles in this research stream. We uncover a prominent focus on economic impact, while social and environmental impacts remain largely neglected. To overcome this critical limitation, we integrate design thinking with responsible innovation theorizing. We develop a framework for responsible design thinking, explaining how to apply this approach beyond a private interest and competitive advantage logic, to address sustainable development challenges, such as climate change, resource depletion, poverty, and injustice. The framework contributes to strengthening the practical relevance of design thinking and its theoretical foundations. To catalyze this effort, we propose an agenda for future research.

    Authors: Naixin Li; Rainer Friedrich; Christian Schieberle;
