    Riparian forests remain largely understudied in the context of climate change in comparison to other forest ecosystems although they serve multiple socio-ecological functions. We evaluated local adaptation and adaptive potential in Populus nigra L., an emblematic tree species of European riparian forests. We set up a reciprocal transplant experiment and measured 17 structural and functional traits among 10 progenies of two genetically differentiated populations. The populations originated from two separate watersheds differing in climate conditions and a total of 1200 seedlings were grown in 1-m3 mesocosms at both sites for one growing season. Traits measured were related to growth, leaf physiology and xylem water transport. The populations showed similar biomass suggesting no local adaptation for overall performance but displayed distinct trait syndromes and plastic abilities. The southern population primarily adjusted through changes in allocation and leaf water-use efficiency while the northern population primarily adjusted through changes in specific leaf area. Genetic variation within populations was most of the times equal or larger than between populations. This combined with the generally moderate to high heritability values and the observed plasticity suggested significant adaptive potential. Altogether, our findings reveal that although evolution may not lead to obvious differentiation between populations in global performance, integrated multi-trait approaches are highly valuable to shed light on how evolution may shape distinct underlying functional strategies among populations resulting in a similar outcome. Shortening food supply chains attracts increasing support from policymakers, to improve returns to farmers and stimulate rural development. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the impacts of short food supply chains on local economies. To address this, the article quantifies the impacts of short food supply chains on local economies, using the Keynesian-based Local Multiplier 3 method (LM3), applied to a unique dataset of 122 farm businesses from five European Union countries (France, Hungary, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom). Estimations cover 305 market chains, comprising both short and long food supply chains, in which sampled farmers participate. The results indicate that the revenues from farm production remain largely within local economies, generating a substantial multiplier effect (LM3 > 2). This effect stems from purchases of farm inputs locally including, in the first instance, hiring local labour, as well as the expenditures of local suppliers that re-spend part of their revenues within the local area. The multiplier effects of short food supply chains are similar to long food supply chain equivalents as both use largely local labour and source tradable inputs locally. In shaping food chain policy a broader set of socioeconomic benefits to local development from selling through short food supply chains should be considered. International audience

    Globalization of food chains and scale increases in business models are dramatically affecting rural areas in Europe, by a simplification of land use, new urban-rural relations and reshaped social networks. While pressures on land use systems have been increasing due to the competition on commodity markets, the role of territorially embedded production systems remains crucial in keeping farm biodiversity and unique cultural landscapes, as well as social and cultural ties. Building on the social-ecological resilience approach (Darnhofer (2020b), this paper examines the resilience of territorially embedded production systems in different regions of Europe, including emergent and ongoing patterns of material, social and cultural relations. It shows how primary producers improve the resilience of their production systems in response to increasing pressures resulting from changing ecological, economic, social and cultural conditions. Three production systems are examined: carp farming in Middle Franconia, Germany; wine production in Tuscany, Italy; and olive oil production in Alentejo, Portugal. The paper adopts an adapted relational approach to conceptualise how resilience develops in terms of the ability of producers and their networks to develop new markets, reduce costs and add value. Different types of enacted relations (sets of mutually empowering connections in space and time) are identified, including relations among family members, between farmers, along the commodity chain and with other stakeholders, such as tourism, policy and regional administrations. Using these insights, the paper argues that it is important to shift the focus of agricultural resilience from the producer level to the network level, particularly how network dynamics emerge as relations enacted by diverse actors. These collaborative efforts have the potential to enable primary producers to maintain cultural landscapes, preserve their ecosystems and ensure the farms’ economic survival and by extension help to maintain the socio-ecological resilience of territorial production systems.

Nitrate comprises the largest fraction of fine particulate matter in China during severe haze. Consequently, strict control of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions has been regarded as an effective measure to combat air pollution. However, this notion is challenged by the persistent severe haze pollution observed during the COVID-19 lockdown when NOx levels substantially declined. Here we present direct field evidence that diminished nitrogen monoxide (NO) during the lockdown activated nocturnal nitrogen chemistry, driving severe haze formation. First, dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) heterogeneous reactions dominate particulate nitrate (pNO3−) formation during severe pollution, explaining the higher-than-normal pNO3− fraction in fine particulate matter despite the substantial NOx reduction. Second, N2O5 heterogeneous reactions provide a large source of chlorine radicals on the following day, contributing drastically to the oxidation of volatile organic compounds, and thus the formation of oxygenated organic molecules and secondary organic aerosol. Our findings highlight the increasing importance of such nocturnal nitrogen chemistry in haze formation caused by NOx reduction, motivating refinements to future air pollution control strategies. BACKGROUND: Exceptional episodes of exposure to high levels of persistent organic pollutants have already been associated with developmental defects of enamel among children, but knowledge is still scarce concerning the contribution of background levels of environmental contamination. METHODS: Children of the French PELAGIE mother-child cohort were followed from birth, with collection of medical data and cord blood samples that were used to measure polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCs), and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs). At 12 years of age, molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and other enamel defects (EDs) were recorded for 498 children. Associations were studied using logistic regression models adjusted for potential prenatal confounders. RESULTS: An increasing log-concentration of β-HCH was associated with a reduced risk of MIH and EDs (OR = 0.55; 95% CI, 0.32-0.95, and OR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43-0.98, respectively). Among girls, intermediate levels of p,p’-DDE were associated with a reduced risk of MIH. Among boys, we observed an increased risk of EDs in association with intermediate levels of PCB 138, PCB 153, PCB 187, and an increased risk of MIH with intermediate levels of PFOA and PFOS. CONCLUSIONS: Two OCs were associated with a reduced risk of dental defects, whereas the associations between PCBs and PFASs and EDs or MIH were generally close to null or sex-specific, with an increased risk of dental defects in boys. These results suggest that POPs could impact amelogenesis. Replication of this study is required and the possible underlying mechanisms need to be explored. International audience

    Authors: Lukáš Kejla; Tim Schulzke; Pavel Šimáček; Miloš Auersvald;

    Carbohydrates are a group of compounds abundantly present in pyrolysis bio-oils. Their quantitative analysis however presents many challenges such as possible co-elution with other oxygenates when liquid chromatographic methods are used. For a cheaper and faster analysis, spectrophotometric methods are a convenient alternative. Most of the absorption spectrometry-based methods stem from the reaction scheme, where the carbohydrates are converted into furfural or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derivatives and simultaneously react with colorizing agents such as phenol or anthrone. Alternatively, the produced compounds can be determined in the UV region without the addition of colorizing agent. An obvious problem arises when these furanic compounds are already present in the mixture, which is the case with most biomass-based pyrolysis bio-oils. In this study, we quantified the responses of 26 potential interferents that are expected to be present in the water-soluble fraction of bio-oils as well as 13 different carbohydrates. To mitigate the interferences, we used styrene-divinylbenzene polymeric resin adsorbents to separate the less polar interferents from the aqueous bio-oil extract and naturally formed bio-oil aqueous phases. A derivatization-GC-MS method was used as a reference for comparison of the results. We found that the adsorption step is crucial for acquiring more precise and accurate results. The anthrone method was the least susceptible to interferences and simultaneously produced results that were the closest to the reference GC-MS method. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences between the optimized anthrone method and the reference GC-MS method.
