    Authors: González-Rosell Barriga, Adrián Humberto;

    In today's world, ensuring water, energy and food security, as well as conserving ecosystems are some of the most pressing sustainability challenges. Our current systems of food production, energy use, and water management often operate in silos. However, these sectors are, by nature, interconnected, food production requires both water and energy, while pumping, treating, and transporting water require energy, and energy production requires water, among many other interrelationships. This siloed approach to management leads to a lack of coordination and significant trade-offs across systems. Moreover, this lack of coordination across sectors and socioeconomic activities has negative consequences for ecosystem conservation, which is vital for ensuring natural resource security. To tackle these issues, it is imperative to design policies or solutions that can effectively address sectoral and cross-sectoral challenges. The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus approach is a systemic and integrated approach designed to manage resources and coordinate sectors comprehensively. By increasing efficiency, reducing trade-offs, building synergies, and improving governance across sectors and resources, the nexus approach has the potential to enhance water, energy, and food security. These characteristics make the WEF nexus an effective approach for supporting policy making. Consequently, the nexus approach has gained considerable attention in the last decade, leading the scientific community to develop new methodologies and adapt existing tools to address cross-sectoral challenges, and guide policy making efforts. Despite the advancements and ongoing efforts, some of these methodologies are too theoretical, conceptual, or complex to put into practice. Achieving effective governance of the WEF nexus remains elusive, making it difficult to address water-energy-food security and ecosystem conservation. Within the scope of this PhD thesis, we have conducted a literature review and identified up to eleven main features in methodologies and tools that are necessary to effectively evaluate the WEF nexus. Based on these features and our knowledge, we selected four criteria that are crucial to operationalize the nexus: (1) tools that integrate quantitative and qualitative information, (2) tools capable of analysing cross-sectoral policies, (3) tools capable of assessing at different spatial scales, and (4) tools capable of simulating future scenarios at different temporal scales. After evaluating various methodologies and tools that address the nexus, we have found no methodology or tool that meets all four criteria. Therefore, the overarching objective of this thesis is to fill this gap in nexus studies by developing a novel participatory WEF nexus framework for co-designing and evaluating nexus solutions, encompassing these four criteria. The Solution Evaluation Framework (SEF) consists of five main phases: (1) identifying nexus solutions, (2) nexus dialogues, (3) nexus modelling, (4) nexus evidence, and (5) nexus-coherence assessment. Throughout the evaluation process, the framework integrates various methodologies. In the nexus dialogues phase, we engage stakeholders and experts from different nexus sectors to identify challenges, co-design solutions and understand the cross-sectoral interlinkages using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM). In the nexus modelling phase, we apply system dynamics models (SDM) to simulate different solution scenarios and quantify cross-sectoral interlinkages. Finally, in the nexus-coherence assessment phase, we utilize cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory to integrate quantitative and qualitative methodologies and measure the synergies and trade-offs of implementing a nexus solution. The other objective of this thesis is to test the usefulness and applicability of the developed framework. To achieve this, the framework was applied to a practical case study involving an increase in irrigation water prices in Andalusia, Spain for the horizon of 2030. Following the methodology of the SEF, we worked with a panel of experts representing various sectors in Andalusia. Additionally, a system dynamics model was developed to simulate the WEF nexus system in the region. Finally, cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory were used to evaluate the solution. The results of the case study revealed that there is a sensitive relationship between water availability, irrigation costs and agricultural production, mainly due to the high level of technology in agricultural irrigation systems in the region. An increase in water price could generate synergies by promoting water security and ecosystem conservation. However, trade-offs were observed, particularly impacting the food sector in the region. The main challenges encountered in applying the framework were the integration of qualitative and quantitative information and the reconciliation of spatial and temporal scales across sectors. Beyond the obtained results, the evaluation of this case study allowed us to demonstrate the capability of the SEF to evaluate nexus solutions by uncovering hidden properties, identifying leverage points, and highlighting key aspects of the complex cross-sectoral system. The framework can be adapted to accommodate different case studies, considering their unique challenges and spatial and temporal scales. Furthermore, it facilitates the evaluation and coordination of multiple policies simultaneously, thereby contributing to nexus-coherence policy making, which gives it a competitive advantage over other methodologies focused on nexus analysis. To conclude, participatory approaches that combine qualitative and quantitative methods prove suitable for identifying and evaluating solutions aimed at improving WEF nexus governance. RESUMEN Garantizar la seguridad hídrica, energética y de alimentos, y lograr la conservación de los ecosistemas, son algunos de los desafíos de sostenibilidad más apremiantes de nuestros tiempos. Nuestros sistemas de producción de alimentos, uso de energía y gestión del agua a menudo funcionan por separado. Sin embargo, estos sectores estar intrínsecamente conectados, la producción de alimentos requiere agua y energía, mientras que el bombeo, tratamiento y transporte de agua requieren energía, a la vez, la producción de energía requiere agua, entre muchas otras interrelaciones. La gestión sectorial aislada genera una falta de coordinación y perjuicios significativos entre los distintos sistemas. Además, esta falta de coordinación entre sectores y actividades socioeconómicas tiene consecuencias negativas para la conservación de los ecosistemas, que son fundamentales para garantizar la seguridad de los recursos naturales. Para abordar esta problemática, es imperativo diseñar políticas o soluciones que puedan abordar de manera efectiva los retos sectoriales e intersectoriales. El enfoque de nexo agua-energía-alimentación (WEF por sus siglas en inglés) es un enfoque sistémico e integrado diseñado para gestionar recursos y coordinar los sectores de manera holística. Permite aumentar la eficiencia, reducir los perjuicios, crear sinergias y mejorar la gobernanza en todos los sectores y recursos, en ese sentido el enfoque del nexo tiene el potencial de mejorar la seguridad hídrica, energética y alimentaria. Además, estas características hacen que sea un enfoque eficaz para guiar la formulación de políticas. Es por esto por lo que el enfoque nexo WEF ha ganado considerable atención en la comunidad científica. Ha habido un impulso por desarrollar nuevas metodologías y adaptar herramientas existentes que permitan abordar los desafíos intersectoriales y guiar la formulación de políticas. Sin embargo, a pesar de los avances y los esfuerzos en curso, algunas de estas metodologías son demasiado teóricas, conceptuales o complejas para ponerlas en práctica. Todavía no se ha logrado alcanzar la gobernanza efectiva del nexo WEF, lo que dificulta garantizar la seguridad del agua, la energía y los alimentos, y lograr la conservación del ecosistema. Dentro del marco de esta tesis doctoral, hemos realizado una revisión de la literatura e identificado hasta once características principales en metodologías y herramientas que son necesarias para abordar de manera efectiva el nexo WEF. Basándonos en estas características y nuestro conocimiento, hemos seleccionamos cuatro criterios que son cruciales para operacionalizar el nexo, estos son: (1) herramientas que integren información cuantitativa y cualitativa, (2) herramientas capaces de analizar políticas intersectoriales, (3) herramientas capaces de evaluar a diferentes escalas espaciales, y (4) herramientas capaces de simular escenarios futuros a diferentes escalas temporales. Después de hacer una evaluación de las metodologías y herramientas existentes, no hemos encontrado ninguna que cumpla con estos cuatro criterios. Por lo tanto, el objetivo general de esta tesis es cubrir el vacío en los estudios de nexo mediante el desarrollo de un novedoso marco participativo para co-diseñar y evaluar soluciones de nexo, abarcando estos cuatro criterios. El Marco de Evaluación de Soluciones (SEF por sus siglas en inglés) consta de cinco fases principales: (1) identificación de soluciones de nexo, (2) diálogos de nexo, (3) modelado de nexo, (4) evidencia de nexo y (5) evaluación de coherencia de nexo. A lo largo del proceso de evaluación, el marco integra varias metodologías. En la fase de diálogos de nexo, involucramos a un panel de expertos de los diferentes sectores para identificar desafíos, co-diseñar soluciones y comprender las relaciones intersectoriales utilizando mapas cognitivos difusos (FCM). En la fase de modelado de nexos, aplicamos modelos de dinámica de sistemas (SDM) para simular diferentes escenarios de solución y cuantificar las relaciones intersectoriales. Finalmente, en la fase de evaluación de la coherencia del nexo, utilizamos análisis de impacto cruzado (CIA) y teoría de redes para integrar metodologías cuantitativas y cualitativas y medir las sinergias y perjuicios de implementar una solución de nexo. El siguiente objetivo de esta tesis es probar la utilidad y aplicabilidad del marco de evaluación de soluciones desarrollado. Para esto, se estudió el aumento del precio del agua de riego en Andalucía - España en el horizonte 2030 como caso de estudio práctico. Siguiendo el marco metodológico SEF, se trabajó con un panel de expertos de varios sectores de Andalucía. Adicionalmente, se desarrolló un modelo de dinámica de sistemas para simular el nexo WEF en la región. Finalmente, se utilizó el análisis de impacto cruzado (CIA) y la teoría de redes para evaluar la solución. Los resultados del estudio revelaron que existe una relación sensible entre la disponibilidad de agua, los costos de riego y la producción agrícola. Esto principalmente por el alto grado de tecnificación de los sistemas de riego agrícola de la región. El incremento en los precios del agua podría promover la seguridad hídrica y la conservación de los ecosistemas. Sin embargo, podría generar perjuicios que afectan particularmente al sector alimentario de la región. Los principales desafíos encontrados al aplicar el marco fueron la integración de información cualitativa y cuantitativa, y la reconciliación de escalas espaciales y temporales entre sectores. Más allá de los resultados obtenidos, la evaluación de este caso de estudio nos permitió demostrar la capacidad del marco SEF para evaluar soluciones de nexo al descubrir propiedades ocultas, identificar puntos de apalancamiento y resaltar aspectos clave en el complejo sistema intersectorial. Además, facilita la evaluación y coordinación de múltiples políticas simultáneamente, contribuyendo así a la formulación de políticas coherentes para el nexo. Todo esto otorga una ventaja competitiva sobre otras metodologías centradas en el análisis de nexo. Como conclusión final, los enfoques participativos que combinan métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos apuntan a ser los adecuados para identificar y evaluar soluciones destinadas a mejorar la gobernanza del nexo WEF.

    Authors: Iglesias González, Rubén;

    Cada año, con la llegada de la época de lluvia y el deshielo en primavera, los deslizamientos de laderas representan una gran amenaza para la vida humana y para un gran número de infraestructuras en entornos naturales. Para abordar esta problemática, tradicionalmente se utilizan técnicas de auscultación que incluyen extensómetros, inclinómetros, piezómetros o redes de Sistemas de Posicionamiento Global (GPS). A pesar de que su uso está muy extendido, estas técnicas presentan un gran número de limitaciones. Por una parte, requieren sensores generalmente caros y complejos, cuya eficiencia está sujeta a la disponibilidad de usuarios expertos para su posterior interpretación. Además, estas técnicas típicamente presentan bajas prestaciones en términos de muestreo espacial y cobertura, dificultando de este modo la caracterización de deslizamientos complejos. Finalmente, requieren la instalación de dispositivos directamente sobre la superficie de deslizamiento, lo cual puede resultar una tarea compleja en zonas de difícil acceso. Durante esta última década, el uso de imágenes de satélite de Radar de Apertura Sintética (SAR) y concretamente el uso de su más notable aplicación, conocida como Interferometría SAR (InSAR), ha experimentado un gran impulso, haciendo posible la observación de estos fenómenos de desplazamiento con precisiones milimétricas. Estos avances están permitiendo el desarrollo de herramientas flexibles por parte de la industria, laboratorios de investigación y universidades, para el estudio de desplazamientos del terreno mediante técnicas InSAR, las cuales están siendo adaptadas para su operatividad e integración con observaciones convencionales y modelos predictivos. Por otra parte, cuando se requiere de una alta flexibilidad en términos de tiempo de revisita, o existe la necesidad de adaptar la orientación del sensor a las características específicas de la zona bajo estudio, la actividad de investigación de un gran número de grupos se ha centrado en el desarrollo de sensores SAR terrestres. Fáciles de implementar y de un menor coste en comparación con soluciones orbitales, estos sensores representan una alternativa muy interesante para la monitorización de zonas localizadas. A pesar de todas estas ventajas, tanto los sensores SAR embarcados en plataformas orbitales como los terrestres presentan distintas limitaciones, especialmente, en áreas montañosas altamente vegetadas donde normalmente se producen los deslizamientos de laderas. Mientras que su rendimiento sobre áreas rocosas es muy satisfactorio en ausencia de nieve, pueden aparecer diferentes limitaciones debido a efectos de decorrelación temporal sobre zonas con vegetación, a distorsiones en la imagen causadas por la geometría de adquisición, a la presencia de artefactos atmosféricos severos en zonas con topografía abrupta o cuando se intentan analizar desplazamientos de carácter rápido. Finalmente, debe tenerse en cuenta que los sensores SAR sólo son sensibles a la componente de desplazamiento en la línea de visión del satélite y por ello, ésta, puede diferir notablemente de la real. Aún queda por tanto un cierto camino por recorrer para superar todas estas limitaciones y convertir a las técnicas InSAR en herramientas totalmente operativas, contexto en el que esta Tesis Doctoral se ha desarrollado. El principal objetivo de esta Tesis Doctoral es el desarrollo de técnicas InSAR para la monitorización de zonas afectadas por deslizamientos de laderas. En concreto, el rendimiento de éstas técnicas para ambas plataformas, orbital y terrestre, se ha comparado y evaluado exhaustivamente en el deslizamiento de El Forn de Canillo, Andorra, que está considerado como con uno de los mayores deslizamientos de ladera de los Pirineos. Las técnicas presentadas en esta Tesis Doctoral proporcionan evidencias para la toma de decisión, apoyadas por la ciencia, con el fin de facilitar la gestión de los riesgos asociados con los deslizamientos de laderas inestables. Every year, with the onset of spring rains and snow melting, landslides represent one of the major threats to human life and infrastructures in natural environments. In this context, different surveying techniques, such as inclinometers, extensometers, piezometers or Global Positioning System (GPS) networks, are typically employed to address landslide monitoring problem. Nonetheless, these conventional techniques present several limitations. They are labor, expensive and usually require skillful users to data interpretation. Moreover, they typically provide poor spatial sampling and coverage, which hinder the characterization of complex landslides. Finally, these techniques require the direct installation of devices over the landslide surface, which could be a complex task, sometimes impossible to fulfill, in hard-to-reach locations. During the last decade, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (InSAR) techniques based on space-borne SAR sensors have matured to a widely used geodetic tool for the precise monitoring of complex displacement phenomena with millimetric accuracy. Concretely, the new family of X-band SAR sensors, like the German TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites or the Italian constellation Cosmo-Skymed, have led to a scientific breakthrough presenting a lower revisiting time (up to few days) and an improved spatial resolution (up to the meter), compared with their predecessors ERS-1/2, ENVISAT-ASAR or RADARSAT-1, which worked at C-band. The industry, research laboratories, and universities are developing flexible tools for displacement monitoring analysis by means of space-borne InSAR techniques, which are being adapted for its fully operational use and for its integration with conventional observations and predictive models. Contrarily, when a high flexibility in terms of revisiting-time is required, or the need to fit the sensor orientation to the specific characteristics of the area under study exists, the research activity of several groups has been addressed to the development of Ground-Based SAR (GB-SAR) sensors. Easy to deploy, and cheaper if compared with space-borne solutions, GB-SAR sensors are a potential alternative, ideal for the monitoring of small-scale areas. The high stability of the sensor platform, and its flexibility in terms of revisiting time, make these systems an excellent option to detect displacements with a high temporal resolution of up to few minutes. Despite all these clear advantages, SAR sensors based on both space-borne and ground-based platforms also present some limitations, especially, over vegetated scenarios in mountainous environments, where landslides typically occur. Whereas its performance over bare surfaces or rocky areas is satisfactory during snow-free seasons, severe limitations arise from temporal decorrelation over vegetated areas, due to layover and shadowing effects caused by SAR geometrical distortions, the presence of tropospheric atmospheric artifacts or when rapid displacements are faced. Finally, it must be taken into account that SAR sensors are only sensitive to the satellite-to-target component of displacement, which may notably differ from the real one. There is still some way to go in order to overcome all these limitations and convert InSAR techniques into fully operational tools, context in which this PhD Thesis has been developed. The main objective of this PhD Thesis is the development of advanced InSAR techniques for the monitoring of areas affected by landslides. Concretely, the performance of both space-borne and ground-based SAR sensors will be compared and evaluated in the area of El Forn de Canillo, Andorra, which corresponds to one of the biggest landslides of the Pyrenees. The techniques presented in this PhD Thesis provide evidences for informed decision making, supported by the science, in order to ease the management of the geo-hazard risk associated with active landslides. Cada any, amb l'arribada de l'època de pluges i desglaç a la primavera, les esllavissades representen una gran amenaça per a la vida humana i per a un gran nombre d'infraestructures en entorns naturals. Per abordar aquesta problemàtica, tradicionalment s'utilitzen tècniques d'auscultació que inclouen extensòmetres, inclinòmetres, piezòmetres o xarxes de Sistemes de Posicionament Global (GPS). Tot i que el seu ús està molt estès, aquestes tècniques presenten un gran nombre de limitacions. D'una banda, requereixen de sensors generalment cars i complexes, on la seva eficiència està subjecta a la disponibilitat d'usuaris experts per a la seva posterior interpretació. A més, aquestes tècniques típicament presenten baixes prestacions en termes de mostreig espacial i cobertura, dificultant d'aquesta manera la caracterització d'esllavissades complexes. Finalment, requereixen de la instal·lació de dispositius directament sobre la superfície de l'esllavissada, la qual cosa pot resultar una tasca complicada en zones de difícil accés.Durant aquesta última dècada, l'ús d'imatges de satèl·lit de Radar d'Obertura Sintètica (SAR) i més concretament l'ús de la seva aplicació més notable, coneguda com Interferometria SAR (InSAR), ha experimentat un gran impuls, fent possible l'observació de fenòmens de desplaçament complexos amb precisions mil·limètriques. Aquests avanços estan permetent el desenvolupament d'eines flexibles per part de la indústria, laboratoris d'investigació i universitats, per a l'estudi de desplaçaments del terreny mitjançant tècniques InSAR, les quals s'estan adaptant per a la seva operativitat i integració amb observacions convencionals i models predictius.D'altra banda, quan es requereix d'una alta flexibilitat en termes de temps de revisita, o hi ha la necessitat d'adaptar l'orientació del sensor a les característiques específiques de la zona sota estudi, l'activitat de recerca d'un gran nombre de grups s'ha centrat en el desenvolupament de sensors SAR terrestres. Fàcils d'implementar i d'un menor cost en comparació amb solucions orbitals, aquests sensors representen una alternativa molt interessant per a la monitorització de zones localitzades. Malgrat tots aquests avantatges, tants els sensors SAR embarcats en plataformes orbitals com els terrestres presenten diferents limitacions, especialment, en àrees muntanyoses altament vegetades on normalment es produeixen les esllavissades. Mentre que el seu rendiment sobre àrees rocoses és molt satisfactori en absència de neu, poden aparèixer diferents limitacions degut a efectes de decorrelació temporal sobre zones amb vegetació, a distorsions en la imatge causades per la geometria d'adquisició, a la presència d'artefactes atmosfèrics severs en zones amb topografia abrupta o quan s'intenten analitzar desplaçaments de caràcter ràpid. Finalment, cal tenir en compte que els sensors SAR només són sensibles a la component de desplaçament a la línia de visió del satèl·lit i per tant, aquesta, pot diferir notablement de la real. Encara queda un cert camí per recórrer per superar totes aquestes limitacions i convertir a les tècniques InSAR en eines totalment operatives, context en què aquesta Tesi Doctoral s'ha desenvolupat.El principal objectiu d'aquesta Tesi Doctoral és el desenvolupament de tècniques InSAR per al monitoratge de zones afectades per esllavissades. En concret, el rendiment d'aquestes tècniques per a ambdues plataformes, orbital i terrestre, s'ha comparat i avaluat exhaustivament en el lliscament del Forn de Canillo, Andorra, que està considerat com una de les majors esllavissades dels Pirineus.Les tècniques presentades en aquesta Tesi Doctoral proporcionen evidències per a la presa de decisió, recolzades per la ciència, per tal de facilitar la gestió dels riscos associats amb les esllavissades.     [ES] Durante las últimas décadas, múltiples retos han puesto en riesgo la sostenibilidad medioambiental, económica y social de los sistemas de producción de vacuno lechero (SPL). Esta Tesis Doctoral aborda algunos de los principales retos del sector en materia de sostenibilidad mediante el desarrollo de conceptos, metodologías y estrategias adaptadas a las necesidades particulares de un amplio abanico de SPL en Europa. Las investigaciones se centran en la evaluación de las herramientas de análisis de la sostenibilidad, el análisis de la diversidad de sistemas de producción existentes, así como en la mitigación adaptada de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) y pérdidas de nitrógeno (N) a escala de granja. Esta Tesis Doctoral presenta un marco cuantitativo que permite un análisis exhaustivo de las herramientas existentes para la determinación de la sostenibilidad a escala de granja. Los resultados muestran como las herramientas evaluadas presentan un mayor número de indicadores asociados con el pilar medioambiental que con el pilar económico y social. En adición, se facilita la identificación de vías para el desarrollo futuro de los modelos, permitiendo una más completa y detallada evaluación de la sostenibilidad. Asimismo, los resultados obtenidos en materia de análisis de la diversidad de SPL, permiten la identificación, descripción y agrupación de las regiones europeas de acuerdo con diferentes tipologías de sistemas productivos. Las 16 tipologías representativas identificadas, combinan las características estructurales, productivas, socioeconómicas y medioambientales de los SPL con la distribución de cultivos forrajeros más relevantes para la producción láctea a escala NUTS2. Al analizar y agrupar la diversidad de sistemas productivos y evaluar su nivel de integración, esta Tesis Doctoral facilita la toma de decisiones basadas en el conocimiento, el diseño y la aplicación de medidas de mitigación de emisiones específicas y adaptadas, así como la promoción de sinergias económicas y sociales positivas. En adición, esta Tesis Doctoral pone de manifiesto la gran influencia de las condiciones climáticas, las características estructurales y las prácticas de manejo sobre las emisiones de N y GEI asociadas a la fermentación entérica, los cultivos, así como a toda la cadena de gestión del estiércol. Al identificar la magnitud y fuentes de emisión de los SPL, se facilita la aplicación de medidas específicas a cada contexto. En términos de mitigación de las emisiones, la reducción de la proteína bruta en la fracción comprada de la dieta es una estrategia eficaz a la hora de mitigar tanto las emisiones de GEI como las pérdidas de N. Además, la implantación de una planta de digestión anaerobia es efectiva a la hora de reducir la intensidad de GEI en todos los SPL evaluados, aumentando únicamente las pérdidas de N en el sistema mediterráneo intensivo. El impacto del incremento de la productividad a través de un mayor uso piensos sobre las pérdidas de N y las emisiones de GEI es variable entre los sistemas examinados. A este respecto, el sistema semi-extensivo centroeuropeo muestra un mayor potencial de reducción de GEI, mientras que el semi-extensivo atlántico obtiene mejores resultados en la reducción de las pérdidas de N. Del mismo modo, el uso de la inyección de purines reduce las pérdidas de N en campo, incrementando las emisiones de GEI en el sistema mediterráneo. La sustitución de urea por nitrato amónico tiene diferentes efectos sobre los GEI y la intensidad de N, observándose un mayor potencial de mitigación en el sistema semi-extensivo atlántico. Por último, las cubiertas rígidas de purines mitigan eficazmente las pérdidas de N durante el almacenamiento, con un impacto mínimo en las emisiones totales de GEI. Así mismo, a lo largo de esta Tesis Doctoral se demuestra como la aplicación cumulativa de medidas de mitigación, deriva en sinergias positivas a la hora de reducir las emisiones globales de la explotación. [CA] Durant les últimes dècades, múltiples reptes n'han posat en risc la sostenibilitat mediambiental, econòmica i social dels sistemes de producció de boví de llet (SPL). Aquesta Tesi Doctoral aborda alguns dels principals reptes del sector en termes de sostenibilitat mitjançant el desenvolupament de conceptes, metodologies i estratègies adaptades a les necessitats particulars d'un ampli ventall de SPL a Europa. Les investigacions se centren en l'avaluació de les eines per a la seua quantificació, l'anàlisi de la diversitat de sistemes de producció existents, així com en la mitigació adaptada de les emissions de gasos d'efecte d'hivernacle (GEH) i pèrdues de nitrogen (N) a escala de granja. Aquesta Tesi Doctoral presenta un marc quantitatiu que permet una anàlisi exhaustiu de les eines existents per a la determinació de la sostenibilitat a escala de granja. Els resultats obtinguts mostren com les eines avaluades presenten un major nombre d'indicadors associats amb el pilar mediambiental que amb el pilar econòmic i social. A més, aquest treball facilita la identificació de vies per al desenvolupament futur dels models i facilita una avaluació de la sostenibilitat més completa i detallada. Els resultats obtinguts en matèria d'anàlisi de la diversitat de SPL permeten la identificació, descripció i agrupació de les regions europees d'acord amb diferents tipologies de sistemes productius. Les 16 tipologies representatives identificades combinen les característiques estructurals, productives, socioeconòmiques i mediambientals dels SPL amb la distribució de conreus farratgers més rellevants per a la producció làctia a escala NUTS2. En addició, en analitzar i agrupar la diversitat de sistemes productius i avaluar el seu nivell d'integració, aquesta Tesi Doctoral facilita la presa de decisions basada en el coneixement, el disseny i l'aplicació de mesures de mitigació d'emissions específiques i adaptades, així com la promoció de sinergies econòmiques i socials positives. Així mateix, aquesta Tesi Doctoral indica la gran influència de les condicions climàtiques, les característiques estructurals i les pràctiques de maneig sobre les emissions de N i GEH associades a la fermentació entèrica, els conreus, així com tota la cadena de gestió del fem. A més, en identificar la magnitud i fonts d'emissió dels SPL, es facilita l'aplicació de mesures específiques a cada context. En aquest sentit, la reducció de la proteina bruta en la porció comprada de la dieta és una estratègia eficaç per a mitigar tant les emissions de GEH com les de N. A més, la implantació d'una planta de digestió anaeròbia va reduir la intensitat de GEH en totes les SPL avaluades, augmentant únicament les emissions de N en el sistema mediterrani intensiu. L'impacte de l'increment de la productivitat a través d'un major use pinsos sobre les pèrdues de N i les emissions de GEH va variar entre els sistemes d'explotació examinats. Referent a això, el sistema semi-extensiu centreeuropeu va mostrar un major potencial de reducció de GEH, mentre que el semi-extensiu atlàntic va obtindre millors resultats en la reducció de les pèrdues de N. De la mateixa manera, l'ús de la injecció de purins va reduir les emissions de N a nivell de camp, incrementant les emissions de GEH en el sistema mediterrani. La substitució d'urea per nitrat d'amoni va tindre diferents efectes sobre els GEH i la intensitat de N, observant-se un major potencial de mitigació en el sistema semi-extensiu atlàntic. Finalment, les cobertes rígides de purins van reduir eficaçment les pèrdues de N durant l'emmagatzematge amb un impacte mínim en les emissions totals de GEH. Així mateix, al llarg d'aquesta Tesi Doctoral es demostra com l'aplicació cumulativa de mesures de mitigació deriva en sinergies positives a l'hora de reduir les emissions globals de l'explotació. [EN] During the last decades, multiple challenges have put the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of dairy cattle production systems (DPS) at risk. This Ph.D. Thesis tackles some of the sector's main challenges in terms of sustainability by developing concepts, methodologies, and strategies adapted to the particular needs of a wide range of European DPS. In particular, special emphasis is placed on evaluating the tools for sustainability assessments, the analysis and clustering of the diversity of existing production systems, and the adapted mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nitrogen (N) losses at the farm scale. This Ph.D. Thesis presents a quantitative framework that comprehensively evaluates whole-farm tools and models. The obtained results show how the models considered incorporate more indicators from the environmental pillar than those related to the economic or social sphere. In addition, this work facilitates the identification of avenues for future model developments, allowing for a more complete and detailed assessment of sustainability. Furthermore, the results obtained allow for the identification, description, and clustering of European regions according to different typologies of production systems. The 16 representative typologies identified combine DPS's structural, productive, socio-economic, and environmental characteristics with the level of overlap with the most relevant fodder crops for dairy production at the NUTS2 scale. Furthermore, by analyzing and clustering the diversity of production systems and assessing their level of integration, this Ph.D. Thesis facilitates knowledge-based decision-making, the design and implementation of targeted and adapted emission mitigation measures, as well as the promotion of positive economic and social synergies. Moreover, this Ph.D. Thesis highlights the strong influence of climatic conditions, structural characteristics, and management practices on N and GHG emissions associated with enteric fermentation, fields, and manure management. In terms of emission mitigation, reducing the amount of crude protein in the purchased fraction of the diet is an effective strategy to mitigate both GHG and N emissions. Additionally, implementing an anaerobic digestion plant reduces GHG emissions in all assessed DPS but increases N losses only in the intensive Mediterranean DPS. The impact of increased productivity through larger use of concentrates on N losses and GHG emissions varied depending on the farming systems examined. In this sense, the Central European semi-extensive system shows a higher potential for GHG reduction, while the Atlantic semi-extensive system accounts for better results when lowering the N losses. Similarly, shallow slurry injection effectively decreases N losses at the field level, although it increases GHG emissions in the Mediterranean DPS. Substituting urea with ammonium nitrate has different effects on GHG and N emission intensity, with greater potential for mitigation in the Atlantic semi-extensive system. Lastly, rigid slurry covers effectively reduces N losses during storage with minimal impact on GHG emissions. Furthermore, this Ph.D. Thesis shows how the cumulative application of mitigation measures leads to positive synergies in reducing the overall emissions of the farm.     Authors: Serrano Juan, Alejandro;

    La limitación de espacio en áreas urbanas junto al crecimiento exponencial de la población, hace necesaria la construcción de infraestructuras subterráneas. Nuevos conceptos en planificación urbana junto con los avances tecnológicos en la construcción hacen posible la ejecución de infraestructuras más grandes y de más eficiencia. No obstante, variables tales como el coste, la duración, la seguridad y la gestión; los problemas políticos, sociales, económicos y ambientales; y garantizar la sostenibilidad futura, el mantenimiento y la eficiencia energética, hacen de esta ejecución un problema complejo. Por ello, todas estas variables deben estar presentes durante todo el proceso constructivo: (I) diseño del proyecto, (II) construcción del proyecto y (III) explotación del proyecto. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo principal saber cómo el ciclo constructivo (diseño del proyecto, construcción y explotación de proyectos) procesa las problemáticas inducidas por la interacción de las nuevas infraestructuras subterráneas urbanas con las aguas subterráneas para luego mejorarlo. Durante el diseño del proyecto (fase I) se recogen los datos históricos, se generan nuevos datos (pozos, pruebas de campo, muestras químicas ...) y se procesa conjuntamente, lo que ayuda a entender el contexto y el diseño de la infraestructura. Existen herramientas muy avanzadas para almacenar y procesar información geológica, hidroquímica e hidrogeológica, aunque la mayoría de estas herramientas no son comunes en los proyectos de infraestructuras subterráneas ya que es común que la mayoría de las construcciones sólo se realice una prueba de bombeo para caracterizar el subsuelo. Por lo tanto, hay una necesidad de proporcionar un conjunto de métodos y de herramientas a los constructores para que puedan aumentar la calidad de su análisis (como pruebas de bombeo), para aumentar así la detección temprana de problemas asociados a las aguas subterráneas. La interacción de las construcciones subterráneas con las aguas subterráneas genera impactos. Estos impactos generalmente pueden minimizarse mediante el uso de medidas correctoras. Los impactos más comunes causados por las construcciones subterráneas son el efecto barrera (impacto en las aguas subterráneas) y la distribución y limitación de subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo (impacto en la construcción subterránea). En la literatura hay muchos ejemplos de diseños para mitigar tanto el efecto barrera y como para mejorar la distribución de las subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo. Sin embargo, no hay ningún diseño que integre ambas soluciones. Es ilógico diseñar una medida correctora sin tener en cuenta todos los factores que intervienen en el problema. Esta tesis presenta un diseño innovador de by-pass para las aguas subterráneas que permite el flujo de agua subterránea a través de la estructura a la vez que proporciona una distribución homogénea de las subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo. El nuevo diseño se ha aplicado en la infraestructura subterránea más grande de Barcelona: la futura estación de tren de La Sagrera. Se ha realizado un modelo hidrogeológico para probar los nuevos diseños en tres escenarios diferentes. Esta nueva solución mitiga el efecto barrera de las aguas subterráneas y optimiza la losa de fondo, lo que reduce considerablemente los costes y aumenta la seguridad durante la fase de construcción. Durante la construcción (fase II) se genera una gran cantidad de nuevos datos. Es necesario auscultar los niveles y la deformación del terreno cuando una construcción rebaja el freático con el fin de anticiparse a acontecimientos inesperados y a preservar las estructuras y / o edificios cercanos existentes. El método actual más usado para medir desplazamientos en el terreno es la nivelación, una técnica que permite evaluar in situ decenas de puntos discretos con una precisión sub-milimétrica. Una técnica emergente para medir la deformación del suelo es el Radar de Apertura Sintética Interferométrica (InSAR), que se basa en imágenes SAR adquiridas o bien desde satélites en órbita o bien desde estaciones en tierra (GB-SAR). Esta técnica de detección remota proporciona una mayor cobertura espacial y más barata que los métodos de auscultación tradicionales. Aunque la tecnología SAR se ha utilizado y validado en una gran variedad de análisis, nadie ha aplicado esta tecnología como una herramienta de auscultación durante la construcción de infraestructuras. Esta tesis contribuye a mejorar el almacenamiento y tratamiento de datos a través de nuevos desarrollos y métodos que permiten aumentar la calidad del análisis hidrogeológico; ofrece nuevas formas de análisis para el diseño de medidas correctoras durante la etapa de diseño; y desarrolla y aplica nuevos métodos de auscultación de infraestructura a través de sensores SAR (terrestres y satélite) durante la fase constructiva The competition for space in urban areas due to an exponential growth of population makes derground engineering plays a crucial role in the development of cities. Urban underground infrastructures deal with variables such as cost, duration, safety, and management; faces political, social, economic and environmental issues; and guarantees future sustainability, maintenance, and energy efficiency. To do so, all these concepts and variables must be kept in mind during the whole construction process: (I) project design, (II) project construction and (III) project exploitation. This thesis aims to demonstrate how the construction cycle deals with the various impacts produced by the interaction of underground constructions with groundwater at each stage of the process, with a view to providing improved processes. During the project design previous data is collected, new data is generated, created and processed, helping to understand the context and to design the infrastructure. There are very advanced tools to store and process hydrogeological data, but most of these tools are not common in infrastructure projects. Often most of the constructions only perform the minimum legal requirement to characterize the ground: a pumping test. Therefore, there is a need to provide the constructors with a set of methods and tools to allow them to increase the quality of their hydrogeological analysis, which will allow early detection problems associated with the groundwater. The interaction of underground constructions with groundwater generates impacts. These impacts can usually be minimized by using mitigation measures. The most common impacts caused by underground constructions are the groundwater barrier effect and the groundwater pressure distribution and limitation under the bottom slab. In the literature there are many examples and designs to mitigate both groundwater barrier effect and groundwater pressure distribution impacts. However, there is no design that integrates both solutions. This thesis presents an innovative groundwater by-pass design that enables the groundwater to flow through the structure and provide a homogenous distribution of the water pressure under the bottom slab. The new integrated design was applied to the largest underground infrastructure of Barcelona: La Sagrera railway station. A hydrogeological model was implemented to test the original and the integrated designs in three different scenarios. This new solution mitigates the groundwater barrier effect and optimizes the bottom slab, considerably reducing the costs and increasing safety during the construction phase. Monitoring is required when dewatering underground constructions in order to anticipate unexpected events and preserve nearby existing structures. The most accurate and spread monitoring method to measure displacements is levelling, a pointlike surveying technique that typically allows for tens of discrete in-situ sub-millimetric measurements per squared kilometer. Another emerging technique for mapping soil deformation is the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), which is based on SAR images acquired from orbiting satellites or by ground-based stations (GB-SAR). This remote sensing technique can provide better spatial point density than levelling, more extensive spatial coverage and cheaper acquisitions. Both satellite and ground-based SAR systems have been used and tested in a variety of analyses. However, nobody has applied this technology as a monitoring tool during construction works yet. This thesis contributes to data storing and data analysis software that implies new and significant method developments for increasing the quality of the hydrogeological analysis; it provides new approaches to address the groundwater corrective measures definition during the design stage, and it develops and applies new methods of nfrastructure monitoring using ground-based and satellite SAR sensors during the construction stage. Degut al creixement exponencial de la població i tenint en compte que l'espai dins les àrees urbanes és finit és, necessari la construcció d'infraestructures subterrànies. Variables com el cost, la durada, la seguretat i la gestió; els problemes polítics, socials, econòmics i ambientals; garantir la sostenibilitat futura, el manteniment i l'eficiència energètica, han d'estar presents durant totes les fases del procés constructiu: (I) fase de disseny, (II) fase de construcció, i (III) fase d'explotació. Les construccions subterrànies interactuen amb el medi subterrani, el resultat de la interacció són uns impactes en la construcció i en el medi ambient. Tots aquests impactes són avaluats al llarg del procés constructiu per tal de ser corregits o minimitzats. L'objectiu principal d'aquesta tesi és conèixer com s'avaluen els diferents impactes a cadascuna de les fas es del procés constructiu per poder així proposar millores. Durant el disseny del projecte i per tal d'entendre el context i el disseny de la infraestructura es recullen dades històriques i es generen noves dades . L'ús de la majoria d'eines hidrogeològiques no és habitual en els projectes d'infraestructures ja que la majoria caracteritzen el terreny amb una prova de bombament. Per tant, és necessari proporcionar als constructors un conjunt de mètodes i d'eines que permetin augmentar la qualitat dels seus anàlisis, per augmentar així la detecció primerenca de problemes associats a les aigües subterrànies. Els impactes produïts per la interacció de les construccions subterrànies amb les aigües subterrànies es poden minimitzar mitjançant l'ús de mesures de mitigació. Els impactes més comuns causats per construccions subterrànies són l'efecte barrera i la distribució i limitació de subpressions sota la llosa de fons. A la literatura hi ha molts dissenys que permeten mitigar l'efecte barrera i millorar la distribució de les subpressions, però no hi ha cap disseny que integri les dues solucions. Aquesta tesi presenta un disseny innovador per bypassar les aigües subterrànies a través de l'estructura proporcionant una distribució homogènia de les subpressions sota la llosa de fons. Aquesta nova solució minimitza l'efecte barrera de les aigües subterrànies i optimitza la llosa de fons, reduint considerablement els costos i augmentant la seguretat durant la fase de construcció. Quan una construcció rebaixa el nivell freàtic cal auscultar els nivells i la deformació del terreny per tal d'anticipar esdeveniments inesperats i preservar les estructures properes existents. El mètode actual més utilitzat per mesurar desplaçaments és l'anivellament, que permet avaluar in situ desenes de punts discrets amb una precisi ó submil·limètrica. Una tècnica emergent és el Radar d'Obertura Sintètica Interferomètrica (InSAR), que es basa en imatges SAR adquirides des de satèl·lits en òrbita o bé des d'estacions al terra (GB-SAR). Aquesta tècnica de detecció remota proporciona una major cobertura espacial i més econòmica que els mètodes d'auscultació tradicionals. Tot i que la tecnologia SAR s'ha utilitzat i validat en una gran varietat d'anàlisis, ningú ha aplicat encara aquesta tecnologia com a eina d'auscultació durant la construcció d'infraestructures. Aquesta tesi contribueix a: (I) millorar l'emmagatzematge i processament de dades a través de nous desenvolupaments i mètodes que permeten augmentar la qualitat de l'anàlisi hidrogeològica; (II) oferir noves formes d'anàlisi per al disseny de mesures correctores durant l'etapa de disseny; i (III) desenvolupar i aplicar nous mètodes d'auscultació d'infraestructura a través de sensors SAR (terrestres i satèl·lit) durant la fase constructiva.

    [ES] Los cnidarios planctónicos son aquellas especies o estadios de vida pertenecientes al fílum Cnidaria que habitan en la columna de agua y, por tanto, están fuertemente vinculados a la dinámica oceanográfica y estructuras hidrodinámicas, como frentes y gradientes ambientales. El objetivo de esta tesis es entender la variabilidad de la comunidad de cnidarios planctónicos que habita la costa catalana (Mediterráneo noroccidental) a diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales y cómo ésta está asociada a la hidrografía y a los parámetros ambientales del área. A corta escala temporal (10 días), durante la primavera, importantes cambios en la abundancia y distribución espacial de las dos especies más abundantes estuvieron fuertemente asociados a la variabilidad en la posición del frente de densidad. El frente actuó como barrera en la distribución de las especies hacia mar abierto. A escala interanual, se observaron cambios en la abundancia, estructura y distribución latitudinal de la comunidad de verano al comparar condiciones extremas de temperatura (julio 2003) y estándares (julio 2004). Las excepcionales temperaturas registradas en Julio 2003, debido a una ola de calor, comportaron una menor abundancia total de la comunidad y un patrón de distribución latitudinal reforzado. A escala interdecadal, se encontraron cambios en la abundancia, composición específica y patrones de distribución de la comunidad, durante el mes junio. La abundancia global de la comunidad aumentó y los patrones de distribución latitudinal se reforzaron al comparar tres años (1983, 2004 and 2011) representativos de cambios climáticos y antropogénicos ocurridos en las últimas tres décadas en el Mediterráneo noroccidental. El principal factor que explicó estos cambios fue la temperatura, representativa de la evolución climática desde los años 80, más frescos, a los años 2010, más cálidos. No obstante, es probable que otros factores antropogénicos como la sobrepesca también hayan podido influir. Todos estos resultados están basados en el estudio de mesoescala de un amplia y heterogénea área caracterizada por diferentes gradientes ambientales en batimetría, temperatura, salinidad y productividad primaria, y distintas estructuras hidrodinámicas, así como en la identificación taxonómica a nivel de especie de la comunidad. La comunidad de cnidarios planctónicos en la costa catalana presenta una gran variabilidad, tanto a nivel temporal como espacial, fuertemente asociada a la hidrografía y a las características ambientales del área, e influenciada por los cambios climáticos y antropogénicos ocurridos en las últimas décadas. Los resultados de esta tesis muestran que es extremadamente importante el estudio y monitoreo de los cnidarios planctónicos (incluidos dentro del zooplancton gelatinoso) en áreas de mesoscala, para valorar de forma robusta cambios a escala temporal, y a nivel de identificación de especie, ya que cambios en la distribución espacial de las especies son sensibles indicadores del cambio climático [EN] Planktonic cnidarians are those species or their stages in the phylum Cnidaria that spent their life in the water column and, therefore, are tightly linked to oceanographic dynamics and water mass structures, such as fronts, and environmental gradients. The objective of this thesis is to understand the variability of the planktonic cnidarian community inhabiting the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean) at different spatio-temporal scales, and their relationships with the hydrography and environmental parameters that characterized the study area. At short time scales (10 days), in spring, important changes in the abundance and spatial distribution of the two most abundant species were closely related to the shifting positions of a density front. The front acted as a barrier limiting offshore displacement of the species. At an interannual scale, changes in the abundance, structure and latitudinal distribution of the community were observed when comparing extreme warm (July 2003) and standard summer conditions (July 2004). The exceptional warm conditions in July 2003 due to a heat wave, lead to a reduction of the total abundance of the community and the latitudinal community ordination was reinforced. At an interdecadal scale, changes in species abundance, community composition and spatial distribution patterns were found during the month of June. Total cnidaria abundance increased and the latitudinal community distribution patterns were reinforced when comparing three representative years (1983, 2004 and 2011) of the climatic and anthropogenic changes occurred during the last three decades in the NW Mediterranean. Temperature was the main environmental factor explaining these changes, representative of the climatic trend from the colder 1980s to the warmer 2010s. Nevertheless, it is likely that others anthropogenic factors, such as overfishing, may have contributed to the observed changes over time. All these results are based in the study of a large and heterogeneous mesoscale area, characterized by different environmental gradients in bathymetry, temperature, salinity and primary production, and by different hydrodynamic structures, as well as in the species level identification of the whole community. The planktonic cnidarian community along the Catalan coast presents a high variability both at temporal and spatial scales, and is tightly related to hydrographic and environmental factors of the area, and influenced by climatic and anthropogenic changes occurred in the last three decades. These results show that it is extremely important to study and monitor planktonic cnidarians (included within gelatinous zooplankton) in mesoscale spatial areas, to robustly assess changes at temporal scales, and at species level, since species spatial changes are sensitive indicators of climate change Memoria de tesis doctoral presentada por Elena Guerrero para obtener el título de Doctora por la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), realizada bajo la dirección del Dr. Josep-Maria Gili i Sardá y de la Dra.     Authors: Morales González, Elisabet;

    [ES] Un objetivo fundamental en los programas de conservación es mantener la diversidad genética y la estrategia de gestión más eficiente para lograrlo es aplicar el método de Contribuciones Óptimas. Este método optimiza las contribuciones de los candidatos a reproductores minimizando el parentesco global ponderada, lo que conduce a niveles más altos de diversidad genética, medida como heterocigosis esperada, y a un control efectivo del aumento de consanguinidad. El parámetro fundamental de este método es la matriz de parentesco. Esta matriz se ha obtenido tradicionalmente a partir del pedigrí, pero la disponibilidad actual de genotipos para un gran número de polimorfismos de un solo nucleótido (SNP) nos permite estimarla con una mayor precisión. Sin embargo, se han propuesto muchas medidas de parentesco genómico y se desconoce qué medida es la más apropiada para minimizar la pérdida de diversidad genética. Por lo tanto, el objetivo general de esta tesis fue investigar la eficiencia de diferentes matrices genómicas de parentesco en la gestión de poblaciones en programas de conservación, cuando se aplica el método de Contribuciones Óptimas. Las matrices comparadas fueron aquellas basadas en: i) la proporción de alelos compartidos por dos individuos (CSIM); ii) las desviaciones del número observado de alelos compartidos por dos individuos respecto del número esperado (CL&H); iii) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método 1 de VanRaden (CVR1); iv) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método 2 de VanRaden (CVR2); v) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método de Yang (CYAN); y vi) segmentos idénticos por descendencia (CSEG). Los resultados para una sola generación, usando miles de SNP genotipados en individuos de una población cultivada de rodaballo, mostraron grandes diferencias en la magnitud de los seis coeficientes de parentesco. Las correlaciones entre los diferentes coeficientes variaron mucho, siendo las más bajas aquellas entre CSIM, CL&H o CSEG y CVR2 o CYAN. La gestión que utiliza matrices basadas en la proporción de alelos o segmentos compartidos (CSIM, CL&H y CSEG) retuvieron una mayor diversidad que aquella que utiliza matrices de relaciones genómicas (CVR1, CVR2 y CYAN). Como era de esperar, maximizar la heterocigosis llevó los alelos hacia frecuencias intermedias. Sin embargo, alejar las frecuencias alélicas de las frecuencias iniciales puede ser indeseable, ya que se pueden perder adaptaciones particulares al medio. Se utilizaron simulaciones estocásticas para investigar la eficiencia de CL&H y CVR2 en el manejo de poblaciones no divididas a lo largo de 50 generaciones y ambas matrices se compararon tanto en términos de la diversidad genética como en términos de los cambios asociados en las frecuencias alélicas. EL uso de CL&H en el método de Contribuciones Óptimas llevó a una mayor diversidad genética pero también en un mayor cambio de frecuencias alélicas que el uso de CVR2. Las diferencias entre estrategias fueron menores cuando sólo se usaron SNP con una frecuencia del alelo menos común (MAF) por encima de un umbral particular (MAF > 0.05 y MAF > 0.25) para calcular CL&H y CVR2 así como cuando se aplicó el método de Contribuciones Óptimas en poblaciones con censo más pequeños (se pasó de N = 100 a N = 20). La evaluación de CL&H y CVR2 se extendió a poblaciones subdivididas, también a través de simulaciones por ordenador. En poblaciones subdivididas, la diversidad genética se distribuye en dos componentes: dentro y entre subpoblaciones. Cuando se otorga un mayor peso al componente dentro de subpoblaciones, es posible restringir los niveles de consanguinidad. Bajo este escenario, la utilización de CL&H resultó ser la mejor opción para gestionar este tipo de poblaciones, ya que mantuvo una mayor diversidad global, condujo a una menor consanguinidad y a cambios en las frecuencias similares a los observados cuando se utilizó CVR2. [CA] Un objectiu fonamental en els programes de conservació és mantindré la diversitat genètica i l'estratègia de gestió més eficient per aconseguir-ho és aplicar el mètode de contribucions òptimes. Aquest mètode optimitza les contribucions dels candidats a reproductors minimitzant el parentiu global ponderat, cosa que condueix a nivells més alts de diversitat genètica, mesurada com a heterozigosi esperada, i a un control efectiu de l'augment de consanguinitat. El paràmetre fonamental d'aquest mètode és la matriu de parentiu. Aquesta matriu s'ha obtingut tradicionalment a partir del pedigrí, però la disponibilitat actual de genotips per a un gran nombre de polimorfismes d'un sol nucleòtid (SNP) ens permet estimar-la amb més precisió. Tot i això, s'han proposat moltes mesures de parentiu genòmic i es desconeix quina mesura és la més apropiada per minimitzar la pèrdua de diversitat genètica. Per tant, l'objectiu general d'aquesta tesi va ser investigar l'eficiència de diferents matrius genòmiques de parentiu en la gestió de poblacions en programes de conservació, quan s'aplica el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes. Les matrius comparades van ser aquelles basades en: i) la proporció d'al·lels compartits per dos individus (CSIM); ii) les desviacions del nombre observat d'al·lels compartits per dos individus respecte del nombre esperat (CL&H); iii) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode 1 de VanRaden (CVR1); iv) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode 2 de VanRaden (CVR2); v) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode de Yang (CYAN); i vi) segments idèntics per descendència (CSEG). Els resultats per a una sola generació, usant milers d'SNP genotipats en individus d'una població cultivada de turbot, van mostrar grans diferències en la magnitud dels sis coeficients de parentiu. Les correlacions entre els coeficients van variar molt, sent les més baixes aquelles entre CSIM, CL&H o CSEG i CVR2 o CYAN. La gestió que utilitza matrius basades en la proporció d'al·lels o segments compartits (CSIM, CL&H i CSEG) van retindré una diversitat més gran que aquella que utilitza matrius de relacions genòmiques (CVR1, CVR2 i CYAN). Com calia esperar, la màxima heterozigosi va portar els al·lels cap a freqüències intermèdies. No obstant això, allunyar les freqüències al·lèliques de les freqüències inicials pot ser indesitjable, ja que es poden perdre adaptacions particulars al medi. Es van fer servir simulacions estocàstiques per investigar l'eficiència de CL&H i CVR2 en el maneig de poblacions no dividides al llarg de 50 generacions i les dues matrius es van comparar tant en termes de la diversitat genètica com en termes dels canvis associats a les freqüències al·lèliques. L'ús de CL&H en el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes va resultar en una major diversitat genètica però també en un canvi més gran de freqüències al·lèliques que l'ús de CVR2. Les diferències entre estratègies van ser menors quan només es van fer servir SNP amb una freqüència de l'al·lel menys comú (MAF) per sobre d'un llindar particular (MAF > 0.05 i MAF > 0.25) per calcular CL&H i CVR2 així com quan es va aplicar el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes en poblacions amb cens més petit (es va passar de N = 100 a N = 20). L'avaluació de CL&H i CVR2 es va estendre a poblacions subdividides, també a través de simulacions per ordinador. En poblacions subdividides, la diversitat genètica es distribueix en dos components: dins i entre subpoblacions. Quan s'atorga un pes més gran al component dins de subpoblacions, és possible restringir els nivells de consanguinitat. Sota aquest escenari, la utilització de CL&H va resultar ser la millor opció per gestionar aquest tipus de poblacions, ja que va mantindré una diversitat global més gran, va conduir a una menor consanguinitat i a canvis en les freqüències similars als observats quan es va utilitzar CVR2. [EN] A main objective in conservation programs is to maintain genetic diversity, and the most efficient management strategy to achieve it is to apply the Optimal Contributions method. This method optimizes the contributions of breeding candidates by minimizing the global weighted coancestry. This leads to the highest levels of genetic diversity, when measured as expected heterozygosity, and to an effective control of the increase of inbreeding. The fundamental parameter of the method is the coancestry matrix which, traditionally, has been obtained from pedigree data. The current availability of genome-wide information allows us to estimate coancestries with higher precision. However, many different genomic coancestry measures have been proposed and it is unknown which measure is more efficient to minimize the loss of genetic diversity. Thus, the general aim of this thesis was to investigate the efficiency of different genomic coancestry matrices in the management of conserved populations when the Optimal Contributions method is applied to maximize genetic diversity. The matrices compared were those based on: i) the proportion of shared alleles (CSIM); ii) deviations of the observed number of alleles shared by two individuals from the expected number (CL&H); iii) the realized relationship matrix obtained by VanRaden's method 1 (CVR1); iv) the realized relationship matrix obtained by VanRaden's method 2 (CVR2); v) the realized relationship matrix obtained by Yang¿s method (CYAN); and vi) identical by descent segments (CSEG). Results for a single generation using thousands of SNP genotyped in individuals from a farm turbot population, showed large differences in the magnitude of the six coancestry coefficients. Moreover, pairwise correlations were those between coefficients greatly varied (especially for self-coancestry). The lowest correlations between CSIM, CL&H or CSEG and CVR2 or CYAN. Management with matrices based on the proportion of shared alleles or on segments (CSIM, CL&H and CSEG) retained higher variability than those based on realized genomic relationship matrices (CVR1, CVR2 and CYAN). As expected, maximizing heterozygosity pushed alleles toward intermediate frequencies. However, moving allele frequencies away from initial frequencies may be undesirable as particular adaptations to the environment can be lost. Stochastic simulations were used to investigate the efficiency of CL&H and CVR2 in the management of an undivided population across 50 generations and both matrices were compared not only in terms of the genetic diversity maintained but also in terms of the associated changes in allele frequencies across generations. The use of CL&H in the Optimal Contribution method resulted in a higher genetic diversity but also in a higher change of allele frequencies than the use of CVR2. The differences between strategies were reduced when only SNPs with a minimum allele frequency (MAF) above a particular threshold (MAF > 0.05 and MAF > 0.25) were used to compute CL&H and CVR2 as well as when the Optimal Contributions method was applied in populations of smaller sizes (N = 20 vs N = 100). The evaluation of CL&H and CVR2 was extended to subdivided populations, also via computer simulations. When populations are subdivided into different breeding groups, it is possible to give different weights to the within- and between-subpopulation components of genetic diversity. When a higher weight is given to the within-subpopulation component, the levels of inbreeding can be restricted. In this scenario, the use of CL&H was the best option for managing subdivided populations as it maintained more global diversity, led to less inbreeding and to changes in frequencies similar to those observed when using CVR2 when a large weight was given to the within-subpopulation term.     Authors: Dulce María Arias Lizarraga;

    Las cianobacterias son microorganismos fotosintéticos aeróbicos procarióticos con la capacidad de eliminar nutrientes de las aguas residuales y sintetizar una gran variedad de compuestos bioactivos y subproductos valiosos. Entre esos subproductos, el glucógeno (carbohidratos) y el polihidroxibutirato (PHB) están recibiendo creciente interés debido a su potencial como sustrato de biocombustible y como bioplástico, respectivamente. El objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral fue cultivar y seleccionar cianobacterias de un cultivo mixto de microalgas para la producción de carbohidratos y de PHB. Para cumplir ese objetivo principal, la tesis se dividió en dos partes. La primera consistió en evaluar el efecto de las condiciones nutricionales y operativas en la selección y crecimiento de cianobacterias nativas de aguas residuales. Mientras que la segunda parte se centró en la acumulación de carbohidratos y PHB através de diferentes estrategias basadas en limitación de nutrientes y de carbono. En la primera parte, se consideró el efecto de las condiciones nutricionales y operativas en la selección y el crecimiento de cianobacterias nativas de aguas residuales cultivadas en aguas residuales secundarias y en digestato. En estaparte, las cianobacterias se seleccionaron de un consorcio inicial mixto de microalgas que trataban aguas residuales. En primer lugar, se evaluaron los efectos de los nutrientes (e.g., concentraciones, ratios y cargas) en un estudio a largo plazo realizado en un fotobiorreactor (FBR) a escala piloto (30L) operado en modo semicontinuo. Los resultados de esta sección evidenciaron que las especies de cianobacterias nativas en aguas residuales Aphanocapsa sp., Chrooccocus sp. y Pseudanabaena sp. fueron capaces de dominar sobre las algas verdes Chlorella sp. y Stigeoclonium sp. en un FBR piloto semicontinuo. Su dominio se logró bajo condiciones de carbono no limitado, relaciones N:P entre 16:1-49:1 (basemolar) y bajas cargas de fósforo inorgánico (IP) (~0.25 mgLd-1). Bajo estas condiciones, un cultivo dominado por cianobacterias fue capaz de alcanzar un promedio de producción de biomasa de 0.08 gL-1d-1. Por último, se llevaron a cabo estudio sacorto plazo en FBRs a escala de laboratorio (3L) para evaluar el efecto de las condiciones operacionales (e.g., regímenes hidráulicos, tiempo de retención de sólidos (TRS), tiempo de retención hidráulica (TRH)). Los resultados indicaron que el un TRH de 6 días y un SRT de 10 días proporcionaron condiciones adecuadas para eliminar las algas verdes suspendidas, tolerantes a bajos niveles de IP (e.g., Scenedesmussp.), y mejorar la concentración de cianobacterias de 2% hasta 70% de la población total, mientras que aumenta la producción de biomasa a 0.12 gL-1d-1. Por el contrario, la reducción de TRH y TRS afectó negativamente a la dominancia de las cianobacterias, favoreciendo el dominio de las algas verdes y una mayor actividad bacteriana. En la segunda parte, el cultivo dominado por cianobacterias obtenido previamente fue sometido a diferentes estrategias para acumular polímeros. Entre estas, las condiciones nutricionales (limitación de nitrogeno (N) y fósforo (P)) y lumínicas (luz permanente y alternancia de luz/oscuridad) se encontraron como estrategias prometedoras para alcanzar un contenido de PHB de hasta el 6,5% y un contenido de carbohidratos del 75% en condiciones de limitación de N y alternancia de luz/oscuridad, en doce días de incubación. Posteriormente, este tiempo necesario de la acumulación se redujo mediante la adaptación de las cianobacterias a regímenes de festín y hambre. Esta estrategia consiste en la alternancia de períodos con disponibilidad de carbono y una posterior ausencia de carbono durante el cultivo. Con la aplicación de esta estrategia, el cultivo acumuló similares cantidades en solo 24h de incubación bajo condiciones aeróbicas iluminadas. Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic aerobic photosynthetic microorganisms with the capacity to remove nutrients from wastewater and synthesize a large variety of bioactive compounds and valuable byproducts. Among those valuable byproducts, glycogen (carbohydrates) and polyhydroxybutyrates (PHB) are receiving increasing interest due to their potential as biofuel substrate and as bioplastic, respectively. The main objective in this PhD thesis was to cultivate and select cyanobacteria from a mixed microalgae culture for carbohydrates and PHB production. In order to fulfil that main goal, the thesis was divided in two parts. The first consisted in evaluating the effect of nutritional and operational conditions on the selection and grow of wastewater-borne cyanobacteria in a mixed microalgae consortium fed with in secondary effluent and digestate. While the second was focused in the accumulation of carbohydrates and PHB throughout different strategies based on nutrients and carbon limitation. In the first part, digestate diluted with secondary effluent wastewater was used to select a culture dominated by cyanobacteria from an initial mixed microalgae consortium in pilot scale (30 L) and lab scale (3L) closed-photobioreactors (PBRs). Through several essays, the PBRs were operated at different nutrients loadings (paying attention on N and P ratios and concentrations) and hydraulic regimes (i.e. continuous, semi-continuous and sequencing batch) in order to find conditions appropriated for cyanobacteria dominance over other wastewater-borne microorganisms (mainly with green microalgae). During approximately one year of operation, the effect of nutrient variations in the influent and their ratios on the culture composition and biomass concentration was evaluated in a semi-continuous PBR operated at 10 days of HRT/SRT. The results evidenced that cyanobacteria species dominated over green algae when the influent had non-limited carbon conditions, N:P ratios between 16:1-49:1 (molar basis) and low phosphorus loads. Under these conditions, cyanobacteria were able to reach an average biomass production of 0.08 g L-1 d-1. Subsequently, short term studies testing operational strategies were performed in order to remove green algae also tolerating phosphorus limiting conditions. These strategies consisted on sequencing batch operation. According to the results, a sequencing batch operation consisting in a HRT of 6 days and SRT of 10 days provided suitable conditions to remove unsettled green algae Scenedesmus sp. and to improve cyanobacteria dominance until reach 70% of the total population. While increasing the biomass production to 0.12 g L-1 d-1. On the contrary, lower HRT and SRT led to high volumetric loads that promoted the presence of other microorganisms (diatoms and protozoa) and bacterial activity. In the second part, the cyanobacteria dominated culture previously obtained was submitted to different strategies to accumulate polymers. Among these, nutritional conditions (N and P limitation) and luminic (permanent light and light/dark alternation) were found to be a promising strategies to reach PHB content up to 6.5% and carbohydrates content of 75% in N limitation under light/dark alternation in batch test performed along two weeks. Subsequently, this time needed of accumulation was reduced through the adaptation of cyanobacteria to feast and famine regimes. Consisting in the submission of the biomass to a period of carbon availability and a subsequent absence of carbon. With the application of this procedure the culture was able to reach similar PHB and carbohydrates concentrations in less than 2 days. In addition, these results indicated that carbon uptake and the consequent polymers production from cyanobacteria can be enhanced through carbon and nutrient feeding strategies.

    To improve the adherence of future R&I activities, Ben@Rail shall develop a framework based on a stakeholder analysis and technological inputs. To achieve the final goal of assessing the benefits of the stakeholders from future R&I activities, the technological inputs will in the final stage be compared and weighted against the stakeholder requirements. This will allow to verify the research priorities within the upcoming Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking (ERJU). This document provides a structured overview of the R&I objectives given by the research plans published by the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) and the ERJU, and with this delivers the technical inputs for the comparison with the stakeholder requirements defined in Deliverable D1.1 “Simplified stakeholder tree and weighting matrix of requirements”. The objectives have been extracted from different documents, with a main focus on the “Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking Master Plan” (MP) and the “Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking Multi-Annual Work Programme” (MAWP). Additonal documents, published by other Shift2Rail research projects, like TER4RAIL and Mobility4EU, or representatives of other transport sectors, have been examined as well.

    Managing and sharing data during a research project has clear advantages. It allows one to quickly find and understand the data when one needs to use it. It also gives continuity if project staff leave or new researchers join, and it avoids unnecessary duplication. A Data Management Plan (DMP) helps to save time and effort and makes the research and data-sharing process easier. By considering in advance what data will be created and how one can organize the necessary support concerning personal data and compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) legislations and protection of individual Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

    This thesis aims to advance the assessment of the future role of bioenergy as a climate mitigation option for the EU to mid-century. This is achieved by improving EU-level projections at a systematic level via accounting for the critical considerations within supply and demand dynamics across global and regional scales, traversing the full delivery-chain and attached emissions. To achieve this aim, the following research questions are addressed: 1. What is the projected role of bioenergy within EU decarbonisation strategies from quantitative assessment approaches, and how well do they capture 'Root-Chute' considerations? 2. To what extent could global bioenergy competition and trade constraints impact EU mitigation potential from bioenergy and vice-versa? 3. How consistent are integrated modelling assessments for bioenergy deployment with EU-level climate, energy and bioenergy-related policy targets? 4. How feasible are long-term projections for EU bioenergy deployment and mitigative potential from the perspective of logistics, scale-up, management practices and technological advancements?

    Authors: González-Rosell Barriga, Adrián Humberto;

    In today's world, ensuring water, energy and food security, as well as conserving ecosystems are some of the most pressing sustainability challenges. Our current systems of food production, energy use, and water management often operate in silos. However, these sectors are, by nature, interconnected, food production requires both water and energy, while pumping, treating, and transporting water require energy, and energy production requires water, among many other interrelationships. This siloed approach to management leads to a lack of coordination and significant trade-offs across systems. Moreover, this lack of coordination across sectors and socioeconomic activities has negative consequences for ecosystem conservation, which is vital for ensuring natural resource security. To tackle these issues, it is imperative to design policies or solutions that can effectively address sectoral and cross-sectoral challenges. The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus approach is a systemic and integrated approach designed to manage resources and coordinate sectors comprehensively. By increasing efficiency, reducing trade-offs, building synergies, and improving governance across sectors and resources, the nexus approach has the potential to enhance water, energy, and food security. These characteristics make the WEF nexus an effective approach for supporting policy making. Consequently, the nexus approach has gained considerable attention in the last decade, leading the scientific community to develop new methodologies and adapt existing tools to address cross-sectoral challenges, and guide policy making efforts. Despite the advancements and ongoing efforts, some of these methodologies are too theoretical, conceptual, or complex to put into practice. Achieving effective governance of the WEF nexus remains elusive, making it difficult to address water-energy-food security and ecosystem conservation. Within the scope of this PhD thesis, we have conducted a literature review and identified up to eleven main features in methodologies and tools that are necessary to effectively evaluate the WEF nexus. Based on these features and our knowledge, we selected four criteria that are crucial to operationalize the nexus: (1) tools that integrate quantitative and qualitative information, (2) tools capable of analysing cross-sectoral policies, (3) tools capable of assessing at different spatial scales, and (4) tools capable of simulating future scenarios at different temporal scales. After evaluating various methodologies and tools that address the nexus, we have found no methodology or tool that meets all four criteria. Therefore, the overarching objective of this thesis is to fill this gap in nexus studies by developing a novel participatory WEF nexus framework for co-designing and evaluating nexus solutions, encompassing these four criteria. The Solution Evaluation Framework (SEF) consists of five main phases: (1) identifying nexus solutions, (2) nexus dialogues, (3) nexus modelling, (4) nexus evidence, and (5) nexus-coherence assessment. Throughout the evaluation process, the framework integrates various methodologies. In the nexus dialogues phase, we engage stakeholders and experts from different nexus sectors to identify challenges, co-design solutions and understand the cross-sectoral interlinkages using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM). In the nexus modelling phase, we apply system dynamics models (SDM) to simulate different solution scenarios and quantify cross-sectoral interlinkages. Finally, in the nexus-coherence assessment phase, we utilize cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory to integrate quantitative and qualitative methodologies and measure the synergies and trade-offs of implementing a nexus solution. The other objective of this thesis is to test the usefulness and applicability of the developed framework. To achieve this, the framework was applied to a practical case study involving an increase in irrigation water prices in Andalusia, Spain for the horizon of 2030. Following the methodology of the SEF, we worked with a panel of experts representing various sectors in Andalusia. Additionally, a system dynamics model was developed to simulate the WEF nexus system in the region. Finally, cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory were used to evaluate the solution. The results of the case study revealed that there is a sensitive relationship between water availability, irrigation costs and agricultural production, mainly due to the high level of technology in agricultural irrigation systems in the region. An increase in water price could generate synergies by promoting water security and ecosystem conservation. However, trade-offs were observed, particularly impacting the food sector in the region. The main challenges encountered in applying the framework were the integration of qualitative and quantitative information and the reconciliation of spatial and temporal scales across sectors. Beyond the obtained results, the evaluation of this case study allowed us to demonstrate the capability of the SEF to evaluate nexus solutions by uncovering hidden properties, identifying leverage points, and highlighting key aspects of the complex cross-sectoral system. The framework can be adapted to accommodate different case studies, considering their unique challenges and spatial and temporal scales. Furthermore, it facilitates the evaluation and coordination of multiple policies simultaneously, thereby contributing to nexus-coherence policy making, which gives it a competitive advantage over other methodologies focused on nexus analysis. To conclude, participatory approaches that combine qualitative and quantitative methods prove suitable for identifying and evaluating solutions aimed at improving WEF nexus governance. RESUMEN Garantizar la seguridad hídrica, energética y de alimentos, y lograr la conservación de los ecosistemas, son algunos de los desafíos de sostenibilidad más apremiantes de nuestros tiempos. Nuestros sistemas de producción de alimentos, uso de energía y gestión del agua a menudo funcionan por separado. Sin embargo, estos sectores estar intrínsecamente conectados, la producción de alimentos requiere agua y energía, mientras que el bombeo, tratamiento y transporte de agua requieren energía, a la vez, la producción de energía requiere agua, entre muchas otras interrelaciones. La gestión sectorial aislada genera una falta de coordinación y perjuicios significativos entre los distintos sistemas. Además, esta falta de coordinación entre sectores y actividades socioeconómicas tiene consecuencias negativas para la conservación de los ecosistemas, que son fundamentales para garantizar la seguridad de los recursos naturales. Para abordar esta problemática, es imperativo diseñar políticas o soluciones que puedan abordar de manera efectiva los retos sectoriales e intersectoriales. El enfoque de nexo agua-energía-alimentación (WEF por sus siglas en inglés) es un enfoque sistémico e integrado diseñado para gestionar recursos y coordinar los sectores de manera holística. Permite aumentar la eficiencia, reducir los perjuicios, crear sinergias y mejorar la gobernanza en todos los sectores y recursos, en ese sentido el enfoque del nexo tiene el potencial de mejorar la seguridad hídrica, energética y alimentaria. Además, estas características hacen que sea un enfoque eficaz para guiar la formulación de políticas. Es por esto por lo que el enfoque nexo WEF ha ganado considerable atención en la comunidad científica. Ha habido un impulso por desarrollar nuevas metodologías y adaptar herramientas existentes que permitan abordar los desafíos intersectoriales y guiar la formulación de políticas. Sin embargo, a pesar de los avances y los esfuerzos en curso, algunas de estas metodologías son demasiado teóricas, conceptuales o complejas para ponerlas en práctica. Todavía no se ha logrado alcanzar la gobernanza efectiva del nexo WEF, lo que dificulta garantizar la seguridad del agua, la energía y los alimentos, y lograr la conservación del ecosistema. Dentro del marco de esta tesis doctoral, hemos realizado una revisión de la literatura e identificado hasta once características principales en metodologías y herramientas que son necesarias para abordar de manera efectiva el nexo WEF. Basándonos en estas características y nuestro conocimiento, hemos seleccionamos cuatro criterios que son cruciales para operacionalizar el nexo, estos son: (1) herramientas que integren información cuantitativa y cualitativa, (2) herramientas capaces de analizar políticas intersectoriales, (3) herramientas capaces de evaluar a diferentes escalas espaciales, y (4) herramientas capaces de simular escenarios futuros a diferentes escalas temporales. Después de hacer una evaluación de las metodologías y herramientas existentes, no hemos encontrado ninguna que cumpla con estos cuatro criterios. Por lo tanto, el objetivo general de esta tesis es cubrir el vacío en los estudios de nexo mediante el desarrollo de un novedoso marco participativo para co-diseñar y evaluar soluciones de nexo, abarcando estos cuatro criterios. El Marco de Evaluación de Soluciones (SEF por sus siglas en inglés) consta de cinco fases principales: (1) identificación de soluciones de nexo, (2) diálogos de nexo, (3) modelado de nexo, (4) evidencia de nexo y (5) evaluación de coherencia de nexo. A lo largo del proceso de evaluación, el marco integra varias metodologías. En la fase de diálogos de nexo, involucramos a un panel de expertos de los diferentes sectores para identificar desafíos, co-diseñar soluciones y comprender las relaciones intersectoriales utilizando mapas cognitivos difusos (FCM). En la fase de modelado de nexos, aplicamos modelos de dinámica de sistemas (SDM) para simular diferentes escenarios de solución y cuantificar las relaciones intersectoriales. Finalmente, en la fase de evaluación de la coherencia del nexo, utilizamos análisis de impacto cruzado (CIA) y teoría de redes para integrar metodologías cuantitativas y cualitativas y medir las sinergias y perjuicios de implementar una solución de nexo. El siguiente objetivo de esta tesis es probar la utilidad y aplicabilidad del marco de evaluación de soluciones desarrollado. Para esto, se estudió el aumento del precio del agua de riego en Andalucía - España en el horizonte 2030 como caso de estudio práctico. Siguiendo el marco metodológico SEF, se trabajó con un panel de expertos de varios sectores de Andalucía. Adicionalmente, se desarrolló un modelo de dinámica de sistemas para simular el nexo WEF en la región. Finalmente, se utilizó el análisis de impacto cruzado (CIA) y la teoría de redes para evaluar la solución. Los resultados del estudio revelaron que existe una relación sensible entre la disponibilidad de agua, los costos de riego y la producción agrícola. Esto principalmente por el alto grado de tecnificación de los sistemas de riego agrícola de la región. El incremento en los precios del agua podría promover la seguridad hídrica y la conservación de los ecosistemas. Sin embargo, podría generar perjuicios que afectan particularmente al sector alimentario de la región. Los principales desafíos encontrados al aplicar el marco fueron la integración de información cualitativa y cuantitativa, y la reconciliación de escalas espaciales y temporales entre sectores. Más allá de los resultados obtenidos, la evaluación de este caso de estudio nos permitió demostrar la capacidad del marco SEF para evaluar soluciones de nexo al descubrir propiedades ocultas, identificar puntos de apalancamiento y resaltar aspectos clave en el complejo sistema intersectorial. Además, facilita la evaluación y coordinación de múltiples políticas simultáneamente, contribuyendo así a la formulación de políticas coherentes para el nexo. Todo esto otorga una ventaja competitiva sobre otras metodologías centradas en el análisis de nexo. Como conclusión final, los enfoques participativos que combinan métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos apuntan a ser los adecuados para identificar y evaluar soluciones destinadas a mejorar la gobernanza del nexo WEF.

    Authors: Iglesias González, Rubén;

    Cada año, con la llegada de la época de lluvia y el deshielo en primavera, los deslizamientos de laderas representan una gran amenaza para la vida humana y para un gran número de infraestructuras en entornos naturales. Para abordar esta problemática, tradicionalmente se utilizan técnicas de auscultación que incluyen extensómetros, inclinómetros, piezómetros o redes de Sistemas de Posicionamiento Global (GPS). A pesar de que su uso está muy extendido, estas técnicas presentan un gran número de limitaciones. Por una parte, requieren sensores generalmente caros y complejos, cuya eficiencia está sujeta a la disponibilidad de usuarios expertos para su posterior interpretación. Además, estas técnicas típicamente presentan bajas prestaciones en términos de muestreo espacial y cobertura, dificultando de este modo la caracterización de deslizamientos complejos. Finalmente, requieren la instalación de dispositivos directamente sobre la superficie de deslizamiento, lo cual puede resultar una tarea compleja en zonas de difícil acceso. Durante esta última década, el uso de imágenes de satélite de Radar de Apertura Sintética (SAR) y concretamente el uso de su más notable aplicación, conocida como Interferometría SAR (InSAR), ha experimentado un gran impulso, haciendo posible la observación de estos fenómenos de desplazamiento con precisiones milimétricas. Estos avances están permitiendo el desarrollo de herramientas flexibles por parte de la industria, laboratorios de investigación y universidades, para el estudio de desplazamientos del terreno mediante técnicas InSAR, las cuales están siendo adaptadas para su operatividad e integración con observaciones convencionales y modelos predictivos. Por otra parte, cuando se requiere de una alta flexibilidad en términos de tiempo de revisita, o existe la necesidad de adaptar la orientación del sensor a las características específicas de la zona bajo estudio, la actividad de investigación de un gran número de grupos se ha centrado en el desarrollo de sensores SAR terrestres. Fáciles de implementar y de un menor coste en comparación con soluciones orbitales, estos sensores representan una alternativa muy interesante para la monitorización de zonas localizadas. A pesar de todas estas ventajas, tanto los sensores SAR embarcados en plataformas orbitales como los terrestres presentan distintas limitaciones, especialmente, en áreas montañosas altamente vegetadas donde normalmente se producen los deslizamientos de laderas. Mientras que su rendimiento sobre áreas rocosas es muy satisfactorio en ausencia de nieve, pueden aparecer diferentes limitaciones debido a efectos de decorrelación temporal sobre zonas con vegetación, a distorsiones en la imagen causadas por la geometría de adquisición, a la presencia de artefactos atmosféricos severos en zonas con topografía abrupta o cuando se intentan analizar desplazamientos de carácter rápido. Finalmente, debe tenerse en cuenta que los sensores SAR sólo son sensibles a la componente de desplazamiento en la línea de visión del satélite y por ello, ésta, puede diferir notablemente de la real. Aún queda por tanto un cierto camino por recorrer para superar todas estas limitaciones y convertir a las técnicas InSAR en herramientas totalmente operativas, contexto en el que esta Tesis Doctoral se ha desarrollado. El principal objetivo de esta Tesis Doctoral es el desarrollo de técnicas InSAR para la monitorización de zonas afectadas por deslizamientos de laderas. En concreto, el rendimiento de éstas técnicas para ambas plataformas, orbital y terrestre, se ha comparado y evaluado exhaustivamente en el deslizamiento de El Forn de Canillo, Andorra, que está considerado como con uno de los mayores deslizamientos de ladera de los Pirineos. Las técnicas presentadas en esta Tesis Doctoral proporcionan evidencias para la toma de decisión, apoyadas por la ciencia, con el fin de facilitar la gestión de los riesgos asociados con los deslizamientos de laderas inestables. Every year, with the onset of spring rains and snow melting, landslides represent one of the major threats to human life and infrastructures in natural environments. In this context, different surveying techniques, such as inclinometers, extensometers, piezometers or Global Positioning System (GPS) networks, are typically employed to address landslide monitoring problem. Nonetheless, these conventional techniques present several limitations. They are labor, expensive and usually require skillful users to data interpretation. Moreover, they typically provide poor spatial sampling and coverage, which hinder the characterization of complex landslides. Finally, these techniques require the direct installation of devices over the landslide surface, which could be a complex task, sometimes impossible to fulfill, in hard-to-reach locations. During the last decade, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Interferometry (InSAR) techniques based on space-borne SAR sensors have matured to a widely used geodetic tool for the precise monitoring of complex displacement phenomena with millimetric accuracy. Concretely, the new family of X-band SAR sensors, like the German TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X satellites or the Italian constellation Cosmo-Skymed, have led to a scientific breakthrough presenting a lower revisiting time (up to few days) and an improved spatial resolution (up to the meter), compared with their predecessors ERS-1/2, ENVISAT-ASAR or RADARSAT-1, which worked at C-band. The industry, research laboratories, and universities are developing flexible tools for displacement monitoring analysis by means of space-borne InSAR techniques, which are being adapted for its fully operational use and for its integration with conventional observations and predictive models. Contrarily, when a high flexibility in terms of revisiting-time is required, or the need to fit the sensor orientation to the specific characteristics of the area under study exists, the research activity of several groups has been addressed to the development of Ground-Based SAR (GB-SAR) sensors. Easy to deploy, and cheaper if compared with space-borne solutions, GB-SAR sensors are a potential alternative, ideal for the monitoring of small-scale areas. The high stability of the sensor platform, and its flexibility in terms of revisiting time, make these systems an excellent option to detect displacements with a high temporal resolution of up to few minutes. Despite all these clear advantages, SAR sensors based on both space-borne and ground-based platforms also present some limitations, especially, over vegetated scenarios in mountainous environments, where landslides typically occur. Whereas its performance over bare surfaces or rocky areas is satisfactory during snow-free seasons, severe limitations arise from temporal decorrelation over vegetated areas, due to layover and shadowing effects caused by SAR geometrical distortions, the presence of tropospheric atmospheric artifacts or when rapid displacements are faced. Finally, it must be taken into account that SAR sensors are only sensitive to the satellite-to-target component of displacement, which may notably differ from the real one. There is still some way to go in order to overcome all these limitations and convert InSAR techniques into fully operational tools, context in which this PhD Thesis has been developed. The main objective of this PhD Thesis is the development of advanced InSAR techniques for the monitoring of areas affected by landslides. Concretely, the performance of both space-borne and ground-based SAR sensors will be compared and evaluated in the area of El Forn de Canillo, Andorra, which corresponds to one of the biggest landslides of the Pyrenees. The techniques presented in this PhD Thesis provide evidences for informed decision making, supported by the science, in order to ease the management of the geo-hazard risk associated with active landslides. Cada any, amb l'arribada de l'època de pluges i desglaç a la primavera, les esllavissades representen una gran amenaça per a la vida humana i per a un gran nombre d'infraestructures en entorns naturals. Per abordar aquesta problemàtica, tradicionalment s'utilitzen tècniques d'auscultació que inclouen extensòmetres, inclinòmetres, piezòmetres o xarxes de Sistemes de Posicionament Global (GPS). Tot i que el seu ús està molt estès, aquestes tècniques presenten un gran nombre de limitacions. D'una banda, requereixen de sensors generalment cars i complexes, on la seva eficiència està subjecta a la disponibilitat d'usuaris experts per a la seva posterior interpretació. A més, aquestes tècniques típicament presenten baixes prestacions en termes de mostreig espacial i cobertura, dificultant d'aquesta manera la caracterització d'esllavissades complexes. Finalment, requereixen de la instal·lació de dispositius directament sobre la superfície de l'esllavissada, la qual cosa pot resultar una tasca complicada en zones de difícil accés.Durant aquesta última dècada, l'ús d'imatges de satèl·lit de Radar d'Obertura Sintètica (SAR) i més concretament l'ús de la seva aplicació més notable, coneguda com Interferometria SAR (InSAR), ha experimentat un gran impuls, fent possible l'observació de fenòmens de desplaçament complexos amb precisions mil·limètriques. Aquests avanços estan permetent el desenvolupament d'eines flexibles per part de la indústria, laboratoris d'investigació i universitats, per a l'estudi de desplaçaments del terreny mitjançant tècniques InSAR, les quals s'estan adaptant per a la seva operativitat i integració amb observacions convencionals i models predictius.D'altra banda, quan es requereix d'una alta flexibilitat en termes de temps de revisita, o hi ha la necessitat d'adaptar l'orientació del sensor a les característiques específiques de la zona sota estudi, l'activitat de recerca d'un gran nombre de grups s'ha centrat en el desenvolupament de sensors SAR terrestres. Fàcils d'implementar i d'un menor cost en comparació amb solucions orbitals, aquests sensors representen una alternativa molt interessant per a la monitorització de zones localitzades. Malgrat tots aquests avantatges, tants els sensors SAR embarcats en plataformes orbitals com els terrestres presenten diferents limitacions, especialment, en àrees muntanyoses altament vegetades on normalment es produeixen les esllavissades. Mentre que el seu rendiment sobre àrees rocoses és molt satisfactori en absència de neu, poden aparèixer diferents limitacions degut a efectes de decorrelació temporal sobre zones amb vegetació, a distorsions en la imatge causades per la geometria d'adquisició, a la presència d'artefactes atmosfèrics severs en zones amb topografia abrupta o quan s'intenten analitzar desplaçaments de caràcter ràpid. Finalment, cal tenir en compte que els sensors SAR només són sensibles a la component de desplaçament a la línia de visió del satèl·lit i per tant, aquesta, pot diferir notablement de la real. Encara queda un cert camí per recórrer per superar totes aquestes limitacions i convertir a les tècniques InSAR en eines totalment operatives, context en què aquesta Tesi Doctoral s'ha desenvolupat.El principal objectiu d'aquesta Tesi Doctoral és el desenvolupament de tècniques InSAR per al monitoratge de zones afectades per esllavissades. En concret, el rendiment d'aquestes tècniques per a ambdues plataformes, orbital i terrestre, s'ha comparat i avaluat exhaustivament en el lliscament del Forn de Canillo, Andorra, que està considerat com una de les majors esllavissades dels Pirineus.Les tècniques presentades en aquesta Tesi Doctoral proporcionen evidències per a la presa de decisió, recolzades per la ciència, per tal de facilitar la gestió dels riscos associats amb les esllavissades.     [ES] Durante las últimas décadas, múltiples retos han puesto en riesgo la sostenibilidad medioambiental, económica y social de los sistemas de producción de vacuno lechero (SPL). Esta Tesis Doctoral aborda algunos de los principales retos del sector en materia de sostenibilidad mediante el desarrollo de conceptos, metodologías y estrategias adaptadas a las necesidades particulares de un amplio abanico de SPL en Europa. Las investigaciones se centran en la evaluación de las herramientas de análisis de la sostenibilidad, el análisis de la diversidad de sistemas de producción existentes, así como en la mitigación adaptada de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) y pérdidas de nitrógeno (N) a escala de granja. Esta Tesis Doctoral presenta un marco cuantitativo que permite un análisis exhaustivo de las herramientas existentes para la determinación de la sostenibilidad a escala de granja. Los resultados muestran como las herramientas evaluadas presentan un mayor número de indicadores asociados con el pilar medioambiental que con el pilar económico y social. En adición, se facilita la identificación de vías para el desarrollo futuro de los modelos, permitiendo una más completa y detallada evaluación de la sostenibilidad. Asimismo, los resultados obtenidos en materia de análisis de la diversidad de SPL, permiten la identificación, descripción y agrupación de las regiones europeas de acuerdo con diferentes tipologías de sistemas productivos. Las 16 tipologías representativas identificadas, combinan las características estructurales, productivas, socioeconómicas y medioambientales de los SPL con la distribución de cultivos forrajeros más relevantes para la producción láctea a escala NUTS2. Al analizar y agrupar la diversidad de sistemas productivos y evaluar su nivel de integración, esta Tesis Doctoral facilita la toma de decisiones basadas en el conocimiento, el diseño y la aplicación de medidas de mitigación de emisiones específicas y adaptadas, así como la promoción de sinergias económicas y sociales positivas. En adición, esta Tesis Doctoral pone de manifiesto la gran influencia de las condiciones climáticas, las características estructurales y las prácticas de manejo sobre las emisiones de N y GEI asociadas a la fermentación entérica, los cultivos, así como a toda la cadena de gestión del estiércol. Al identificar la magnitud y fuentes de emisión de los SPL, se facilita la aplicación de medidas específicas a cada contexto. En términos de mitigación de las emisiones, la reducción de la proteína bruta en la fracción comprada de la dieta es una estrategia eficaz a la hora de mitigar tanto las emisiones de GEI como las pérdidas de N. Además, la implantación de una planta de digestión anaerobia es efectiva a la hora de reducir la intensidad de GEI en todos los SPL evaluados, aumentando únicamente las pérdidas de N en el sistema mediterráneo intensivo. El impacto del incremento de la productividad a través de un mayor uso piensos sobre las pérdidas de N y las emisiones de GEI es variable entre los sistemas examinados. A este respecto, el sistema semi-extensivo centroeuropeo muestra un mayor potencial de reducción de GEI, mientras que el semi-extensivo atlántico obtiene mejores resultados en la reducción de las pérdidas de N. Del mismo modo, el uso de la inyección de purines reduce las pérdidas de N en campo, incrementando las emisiones de GEI en el sistema mediterráneo. La sustitución de urea por nitrato amónico tiene diferentes efectos sobre los GEI y la intensidad de N, observándose un mayor potencial de mitigación en el sistema semi-extensivo atlántico. Por último, las cubiertas rígidas de purines mitigan eficazmente las pérdidas de N durante el almacenamiento, con un impacto mínimo en las emisiones totales de GEI. Así mismo, a lo largo de esta Tesis Doctoral se demuestra como la aplicación cumulativa de medidas de mitigación, deriva en sinergias positivas a la hora de reducir las emisiones globales de la explotación. [CA] Durant les últimes dècades, múltiples reptes n'han posat en risc la sostenibilitat mediambiental, econòmica i social dels sistemes de producció de boví de llet (SPL). Aquesta Tesi Doctoral aborda alguns dels principals reptes del sector en termes de sostenibilitat mitjançant el desenvolupament de conceptes, metodologies i estratègies adaptades a les necessitats particulars d'un ampli ventall de SPL a Europa. Les investigacions se centren en l'avaluació de les eines per a la seua quantificació, l'anàlisi de la diversitat de sistemes de producció existents, així com en la mitigació adaptada de les emissions de gasos d'efecte d'hivernacle (GEH) i pèrdues de nitrogen (N) a escala de granja. Aquesta Tesi Doctoral presenta un marc quantitatiu que permet una anàlisi exhaustiu de les eines existents per a la determinació de la sostenibilitat a escala de granja. Els resultats obtinguts mostren com les eines avaluades presenten un major nombre d'indicadors associats amb el pilar mediambiental que amb el pilar econòmic i social. A més, aquest treball facilita la identificació de vies per al desenvolupament futur dels models i facilita una avaluació de la sostenibilitat més completa i detallada. Els resultats obtinguts en matèria d'anàlisi de la diversitat de SPL permeten la identificació, descripció i agrupació de les regions europees d'acord amb diferents tipologies de sistemes productius. Les 16 tipologies representatives identificades combinen les característiques estructurals, productives, socioeconòmiques i mediambientals dels SPL amb la distribució de conreus farratgers més rellevants per a la producció làctia a escala NUTS2. En addició, en analitzar i agrupar la diversitat de sistemes productius i avaluar el seu nivell d'integració, aquesta Tesi Doctoral facilita la presa de decisions basada en el coneixement, el disseny i l'aplicació de mesures de mitigació d'emissions específiques i adaptades, així com la promoció de sinergies econòmiques i socials positives. Així mateix, aquesta Tesi Doctoral indica la gran influència de les condicions climàtiques, les característiques estructurals i les pràctiques de maneig sobre les emissions de N i GEH associades a la fermentació entèrica, els conreus, així com tota la cadena de gestió del fem. A més, en identificar la magnitud i fonts d'emissió dels SPL, es facilita l'aplicació de mesures específiques a cada context. En aquest sentit, la reducció de la proteina bruta en la porció comprada de la dieta és una estratègia eficaç per a mitigar tant les emissions de GEH com les de N. A més, la implantació d'una planta de digestió anaeròbia va reduir la intensitat de GEH en totes les SPL avaluades, augmentant únicament les emissions de N en el sistema mediterrani intensiu. L'impacte de l'increment de la productivitat a través d'un major use pinsos sobre les pèrdues de N i les emissions de GEH va variar entre els sistemes d'explotació examinats. Referent a això, el sistema semi-extensiu centreeuropeu va mostrar un major potencial de reducció de GEH, mentre que el semi-extensiu atlàntic va obtindre millors resultats en la reducció de les pèrdues de N. De la mateixa manera, l'ús de la injecció de purins va reduir les emissions de N a nivell de camp, incrementant les emissions de GEH en el sistema mediterrani. La substitució d'urea per nitrat d'amoni va tindre diferents efectes sobre els GEH i la intensitat de N, observant-se un major potencial de mitigació en el sistema semi-extensiu atlàntic. Finalment, les cobertes rígides de purins van reduir eficaçment les pèrdues de N durant l'emmagatzematge amb un impacte mínim en les emissions totals de GEH. Així mateix, al llarg d'aquesta Tesi Doctoral es demostra com l'aplicació cumulativa de mesures de mitigació deriva en sinergies positives a l'hora de reduir les emissions globals de l'explotació. [EN] During the last decades, multiple challenges have put the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of dairy cattle production systems (DPS) at risk. This Ph.D. Thesis tackles some of the sector's main challenges in terms of sustainability by developing concepts, methodologies, and strategies adapted to the particular needs of a wide range of European DPS. In particular, special emphasis is placed on evaluating the tools for sustainability assessments, the analysis and clustering of the diversity of existing production systems, and the adapted mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nitrogen (N) losses at the farm scale. This Ph.D. Thesis presents a quantitative framework that comprehensively evaluates whole-farm tools and models. The obtained results show how the models considered incorporate more indicators from the environmental pillar than those related to the economic or social sphere. In addition, this work facilitates the identification of avenues for future model developments, allowing for a more complete and detailed assessment of sustainability. Furthermore, the results obtained allow for the identification, description, and clustering of European regions according to different typologies of production systems. The 16 representative typologies identified combine DPS's structural, productive, socio-economic, and environmental characteristics with the level of overlap with the most relevant fodder crops for dairy production at the NUTS2 scale. Furthermore, by analyzing and clustering the diversity of production systems and assessing their level of integration, this Ph.D. Thesis facilitates knowledge-based decision-making, the design and implementation of targeted and adapted emission mitigation measures, as well as the promotion of positive economic and social synergies. Moreover, this Ph.D. Thesis highlights the strong influence of climatic conditions, structural characteristics, and management practices on N and GHG emissions associated with enteric fermentation, fields, and manure management. In terms of emission mitigation, reducing the amount of crude protein in the purchased fraction of the diet is an effective strategy to mitigate both GHG and N emissions. Additionally, implementing an anaerobic digestion plant reduces GHG emissions in all assessed DPS but increases N losses only in the intensive Mediterranean DPS. The impact of increased productivity through larger use of concentrates on N losses and GHG emissions varied depending on the farming systems examined. In this sense, the Central European semi-extensive system shows a higher potential for GHG reduction, while the Atlantic semi-extensive system accounts for better results when lowering the N losses. Similarly, shallow slurry injection effectively decreases N losses at the field level, although it increases GHG emissions in the Mediterranean DPS. Substituting urea with ammonium nitrate has different effects on GHG and N emission intensity, with greater potential for mitigation in the Atlantic semi-extensive system. Lastly, rigid slurry covers effectively reduces N losses during storage with minimal impact on GHG emissions. Furthermore, this Ph.D. Thesis shows how the cumulative application of mitigation measures leads to positive synergies in reducing the overall emissions of the farm.     Authors: Serrano Juan, Alejandro;

    La limitación de espacio en áreas urbanas junto al crecimiento exponencial de la población, hace necesaria la construcción de infraestructuras subterráneas. Nuevos conceptos en planificación urbana junto con los avances tecnológicos en la construcción hacen posible la ejecución de infraestructuras más grandes y de más eficiencia. No obstante, variables tales como el coste, la duración, la seguridad y la gestión; los problemas políticos, sociales, económicos y ambientales; y garantizar la sostenibilidad futura, el mantenimiento y la eficiencia energética, hacen de esta ejecución un problema complejo. Por ello, todas estas variables deben estar presentes durante todo el proceso constructivo: (I) diseño del proyecto, (II) construcción del proyecto y (III) explotación del proyecto. Esta tesis tiene como objetivo principal saber cómo el ciclo constructivo (diseño del proyecto, construcción y explotación de proyectos) procesa las problemáticas inducidas por la interacción de las nuevas infraestructuras subterráneas urbanas con las aguas subterráneas para luego mejorarlo. Durante el diseño del proyecto (fase I) se recogen los datos históricos, se generan nuevos datos (pozos, pruebas de campo, muestras químicas ...) y se procesa conjuntamente, lo que ayuda a entender el contexto y el diseño de la infraestructura. Existen herramientas muy avanzadas para almacenar y procesar información geológica, hidroquímica e hidrogeológica, aunque la mayoría de estas herramientas no son comunes en los proyectos de infraestructuras subterráneas ya que es común que la mayoría de las construcciones sólo se realice una prueba de bombeo para caracterizar el subsuelo. Por lo tanto, hay una necesidad de proporcionar un conjunto de métodos y de herramientas a los constructores para que puedan aumentar la calidad de su análisis (como pruebas de bombeo), para aumentar así la detección temprana de problemas asociados a las aguas subterráneas. La interacción de las construcciones subterráneas con las aguas subterráneas genera impactos. Estos impactos generalmente pueden minimizarse mediante el uso de medidas correctoras. Los impactos más comunes causados por las construcciones subterráneas son el efecto barrera (impacto en las aguas subterráneas) y la distribución y limitación de subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo (impacto en la construcción subterránea). En la literatura hay muchos ejemplos de diseños para mitigar tanto el efecto barrera y como para mejorar la distribución de las subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo. Sin embargo, no hay ningún diseño que integre ambas soluciones. Es ilógico diseñar una medida correctora sin tener en cuenta todos los factores que intervienen en el problema. Esta tesis presenta un diseño innovador de by-pass para las aguas subterráneas que permite el flujo de agua subterránea a través de la estructura a la vez que proporciona una distribución homogénea de las subpresiones bajo la losa de fondo. El nuevo diseño se ha aplicado en la infraestructura subterránea más grande de Barcelona: la futura estación de tren de La Sagrera. Se ha realizado un modelo hidrogeológico para probar los nuevos diseños en tres escenarios diferentes. Esta nueva solución mitiga el efecto barrera de las aguas subterráneas y optimiza la losa de fondo, lo que reduce considerablemente los costes y aumenta la seguridad durante la fase de construcción. Durante la construcción (fase II) se genera una gran cantidad de nuevos datos. Es necesario auscultar los niveles y la deformación del terreno cuando una construcción rebaja el freático con el fin de anticiparse a acontecimientos inesperados y a preservar las estructuras y / o edificios cercanos existentes. El método actual más usado para medir desplazamientos en el terreno es la nivelación, una técnica que permite evaluar in situ decenas de puntos discretos con una precisión sub-milimétrica. Una técnica emergente para medir la deformación del suelo es el Radar de Apertura Sintética Interferométrica (InSAR), que se basa en imágenes SAR adquiridas o bien desde satélites en órbita o bien desde estaciones en tierra (GB-SAR). Esta técnica de detección remota proporciona una mayor cobertura espacial y más barata que los métodos de auscultación tradicionales. Aunque la tecnología SAR se ha utilizado y validado en una gran variedad de análisis, nadie ha aplicado esta tecnología como una herramienta de auscultación durante la construcción de infraestructuras. Esta tesis contribuye a mejorar el almacenamiento y tratamiento de datos a través de nuevos desarrollos y métodos que permiten aumentar la calidad del análisis hidrogeológico; ofrece nuevas formas de análisis para el diseño de medidas correctoras durante la etapa de diseño; y desarrolla y aplica nuevos métodos de auscultación de infraestructura a través de sensores SAR (terrestres y satélite) durante la fase constructiva The competition for space in urban areas due to an exponential growth of population makes derground engineering plays a crucial role in the development of cities. Urban underground infrastructures deal with variables such as cost, duration, safety, and management; faces political, social, economic and environmental issues; and guarantees future sustainability, maintenance, and energy efficiency. To do so, all these concepts and variables must be kept in mind during the whole construction process: (I) project design, (II) project construction and (III) project exploitation. This thesis aims to demonstrate how the construction cycle deals with the various impacts produced by the interaction of underground constructions with groundwater at each stage of the process, with a view to providing improved processes. During the project design previous data is collected, new data is generated, created and processed, helping to understand the context and to design the infrastructure. There are very advanced tools to store and process hydrogeological data, but most of these tools are not common in infrastructure projects. Often most of the constructions only perform the minimum legal requirement to characterize the ground: a pumping test. Therefore, there is a need to provide the constructors with a set of methods and tools to allow them to increase the quality of their hydrogeological analysis, which will allow early detection problems associated with the groundwater. The interaction of underground constructions with groundwater generates impacts. These impacts can usually be minimized by using mitigation measures. The most common impacts caused by underground constructions are the groundwater barrier effect and the groundwater pressure distribution and limitation under the bottom slab. In the literature there are many examples and designs to mitigate both groundwater barrier effect and groundwater pressure distribution impacts. However, there is no design that integrates both solutions. This thesis presents an innovative groundwater by-pass design that enables the groundwater to flow through the structure and provide a homogenous distribution of the water pressure under the bottom slab. The new integrated design was applied to the largest underground infrastructure of Barcelona: La Sagrera railway station. A hydrogeological model was implemented to test the original and the integrated designs in three different scenarios. This new solution mitigates the groundwater barrier effect and optimizes the bottom slab, considerably reducing the costs and increasing safety during the construction phase. Monitoring is required when dewatering underground constructions in order to anticipate unexpected events and preserve nearby existing structures. The most accurate and spread monitoring method to measure displacements is levelling, a pointlike surveying technique that typically allows for tens of discrete in-situ sub-millimetric measurements per squared kilometer. Another emerging technique for mapping soil deformation is the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), which is based on SAR images acquired from orbiting satellites or by ground-based stations (GB-SAR). This remote sensing technique can provide better spatial point density than levelling, more extensive spatial coverage and cheaper acquisitions. Both satellite and ground-based SAR systems have been used and tested in a variety of analyses. However, nobody has applied this technology as a monitoring tool during construction works yet. This thesis contributes to data storing and data analysis software that implies new and significant method developments for increasing the quality of the hydrogeological analysis; it provides new approaches to address the groundwater corrective measures definition during the design stage, and it develops and applies new methods of nfrastructure monitoring using ground-based and satellite SAR sensors during the construction stage. Degut al creixement exponencial de la població i tenint en compte que l'espai dins les àrees urbanes és finit és, necessari la construcció d'infraestructures subterrànies. Variables com el cost, la durada, la seguretat i la gestió; els problemes polítics, socials, econòmics i ambientals; garantir la sostenibilitat futura, el manteniment i l'eficiència energètica, han d'estar presents durant totes les fases del procés constructiu: (I) fase de disseny, (II) fase de construcció, i (III) fase d'explotació. Les construccions subterrànies interactuen amb el medi subterrani, el resultat de la interacció són uns impactes en la construcció i en el medi ambient. Tots aquests impactes són avaluats al llarg del procés constructiu per tal de ser corregits o minimitzats. L'objectiu principal d'aquesta tesi és conèixer com s'avaluen els diferents impactes a cadascuna de les fas es del procés constructiu per poder així proposar millores. Durant el disseny del projecte i per tal d'entendre el context i el disseny de la infraestructura es recullen dades històriques i es generen noves dades . L'ús de la majoria d'eines hidrogeològiques no és habitual en els projectes d'infraestructures ja que la majoria caracteritzen el terreny amb una prova de bombament. Per tant, és necessari proporcionar als constructors un conjunt de mètodes i d'eines que permetin augmentar la qualitat dels seus anàlisis, per augmentar així la detecció primerenca de problemes associats a les aigües subterrànies. Els impactes produïts per la interacció de les construccions subterrànies amb les aigües subterrànies es poden minimitzar mitjançant l'ús de mesures de mitigació. Els impactes més comuns causats per construccions subterrànies són l'efecte barrera i la distribució i limitació de subpressions sota la llosa de fons. A la literatura hi ha molts dissenys que permeten mitigar l'efecte barrera i millorar la distribució de les subpressions, però no hi ha cap disseny que integri les dues solucions. Aquesta tesi presenta un disseny innovador per bypassar les aigües subterrànies a través de l'estructura proporcionant una distribució homogènia de les subpressions sota la llosa de fons. Aquesta nova solució minimitza l'efecte barrera de les aigües subterrànies i optimitza la llosa de fons, reduint considerablement els costos i augmentant la seguretat durant la fase de construcció. Quan una construcció rebaixa el nivell freàtic cal auscultar els nivells i la deformació del terreny per tal d'anticipar esdeveniments inesperats i preservar les estructures properes existents. El mètode actual més utilitzat per mesurar desplaçaments és l'anivellament, que permet avaluar in situ desenes de punts discrets amb una precisi ó submil·limètrica. Una tècnica emergent és el Radar d'Obertura Sintètica Interferomètrica (InSAR), que es basa en imatges SAR adquirides des de satèl·lits en òrbita o bé des d'estacions al terra (GB-SAR). Aquesta tècnica de detecció remota proporciona una major cobertura espacial i més econòmica que els mètodes d'auscultació tradicionals. Tot i que la tecnologia SAR s'ha utilitzat i validat en una gran varietat d'anàlisis, ningú ha aplicat encara aquesta tecnologia com a eina d'auscultació durant la construcció d'infraestructures. Aquesta tesi contribueix a: (I) millorar l'emmagatzematge i processament de dades a través de nous desenvolupaments i mètodes que permeten augmentar la qualitat de l'anàlisi hidrogeològica; (II) oferir noves formes d'anàlisi per al disseny de mesures correctores durant l'etapa de disseny; i (III) desenvolupar i aplicar nous mètodes d'auscultació d'infraestructura a través de sensors SAR (terrestres i satèl·lit) durant la fase constructiva.

    [ES] Los cnidarios planctónicos son aquellas especies o estadios de vida pertenecientes al fílum Cnidaria que habitan en la columna de agua y, por tanto, están fuertemente vinculados a la dinámica oceanográfica y estructuras hidrodinámicas, como frentes y gradientes ambientales. El objetivo de esta tesis es entender la variabilidad de la comunidad de cnidarios planctónicos que habita la costa catalana (Mediterráneo noroccidental) a diferentes escalas espaciales y temporales y cómo ésta está asociada a la hidrografía y a los parámetros ambientales del área. A corta escala temporal (10 días), durante la primavera, importantes cambios en la abundancia y distribución espacial de las dos especies más abundantes estuvieron fuertemente asociados a la variabilidad en la posición del frente de densidad. El frente actuó como barrera en la distribución de las especies hacia mar abierto. A escala interanual, se observaron cambios en la abundancia, estructura y distribución latitudinal de la comunidad de verano al comparar condiciones extremas de temperatura (julio 2003) y estándares (julio 2004). Las excepcionales temperaturas registradas en Julio 2003, debido a una ola de calor, comportaron una menor abundancia total de la comunidad y un patrón de distribución latitudinal reforzado. A escala interdecadal, se encontraron cambios en la abundancia, composición específica y patrones de distribución de la comunidad, durante el mes junio. La abundancia global de la comunidad aumentó y los patrones de distribución latitudinal se reforzaron al comparar tres años (1983, 2004 and 2011) representativos de cambios climáticos y antropogénicos ocurridos en las últimas tres décadas en el Mediterráneo noroccidental. El principal factor que explicó estos cambios fue la temperatura, representativa de la evolución climática desde los años 80, más frescos, a los años 2010, más cálidos. No obstante, es probable que otros factores antropogénicos como la sobrepesca también hayan podido influir. Todos estos resultados están basados en el estudio de mesoescala de un amplia y heterogénea área caracterizada por diferentes gradientes ambientales en batimetría, temperatura, salinidad y productividad primaria, y distintas estructuras hidrodinámicas, así como en la identificación taxonómica a nivel de especie de la comunidad. La comunidad de cnidarios planctónicos en la costa catalana presenta una gran variabilidad, tanto a nivel temporal como espacial, fuertemente asociada a la hidrografía y a las características ambientales del área, e influenciada por los cambios climáticos y antropogénicos ocurridos en las últimas décadas. Los resultados de esta tesis muestran que es extremadamente importante el estudio y monitoreo de los cnidarios planctónicos (incluidos dentro del zooplancton gelatinoso) en áreas de mesoscala, para valorar de forma robusta cambios a escala temporal, y a nivel de identificación de especie, ya que cambios en la distribución espacial de las especies son sensibles indicadores del cambio climático [EN] Planktonic cnidarians are those species or their stages in the phylum Cnidaria that spent their life in the water column and, therefore, are tightly linked to oceanographic dynamics and water mass structures, such as fronts, and environmental gradients. The objective of this thesis is to understand the variability of the planktonic cnidarian community inhabiting the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean) at different spatio-temporal scales, and their relationships with the hydrography and environmental parameters that characterized the study area. At short time scales (10 days), in spring, important changes in the abundance and spatial distribution of the two most abundant species were closely related to the shifting positions of a density front. The front acted as a barrier limiting offshore displacement of the species. At an interannual scale, changes in the abundance, structure and latitudinal distribution of the community were observed when comparing extreme warm (July 2003) and standard summer conditions (July 2004). The exceptional warm conditions in July 2003 due to a heat wave, lead to a reduction of the total abundance of the community and the latitudinal community ordination was reinforced. At an interdecadal scale, changes in species abundance, community composition and spatial distribution patterns were found during the month of June. Total cnidaria abundance increased and the latitudinal community distribution patterns were reinforced when comparing three representative years (1983, 2004 and 2011) of the climatic and anthropogenic changes occurred during the last three decades in the NW Mediterranean. Temperature was the main environmental factor explaining these changes, representative of the climatic trend from the colder 1980s to the warmer 2010s. Nevertheless, it is likely that others anthropogenic factors, such as overfishing, may have contributed to the observed changes over time. All these results are based in the study of a large and heterogeneous mesoscale area, characterized by different environmental gradients in bathymetry, temperature, salinity and primary production, and by different hydrodynamic structures, as well as in the species level identification of the whole community. The planktonic cnidarian community along the Catalan coast presents a high variability both at temporal and spatial scales, and is tightly related to hydrographic and environmental factors of the area, and influenced by climatic and anthropogenic changes occurred in the last three decades. These results show that it is extremely important to study and monitor planktonic cnidarians (included within gelatinous zooplankton) in mesoscale spatial areas, to robustly assess changes at temporal scales, and at species level, since species spatial changes are sensitive indicators of climate change Memoria de tesis doctoral presentada por Elena Guerrero para obtener el título de Doctora por la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), realizada bajo la dirección del Dr. Josep-Maria Gili i Sardá y de la Dra.     Authors: Morales González, Elisabet;

    [ES] Un objetivo fundamental en los programas de conservación es mantener la diversidad genética y la estrategia de gestión más eficiente para lograrlo es aplicar el método de Contribuciones Óptimas. Este método optimiza las contribuciones de los candidatos a reproductores minimizando el parentesco global ponderada, lo que conduce a niveles más altos de diversidad genética, medida como heterocigosis esperada, y a un control efectivo del aumento de consanguinidad. El parámetro fundamental de este método es la matriz de parentesco. Esta matriz se ha obtenido tradicionalmente a partir del pedigrí, pero la disponibilidad actual de genotipos para un gran número de polimorfismos de un solo nucleótido (SNP) nos permite estimarla con una mayor precisión. Sin embargo, se han propuesto muchas medidas de parentesco genómico y se desconoce qué medida es la más apropiada para minimizar la pérdida de diversidad genética. Por lo tanto, el objetivo general de esta tesis fue investigar la eficiencia de diferentes matrices genómicas de parentesco en la gestión de poblaciones en programas de conservación, cuando se aplica el método de Contribuciones Óptimas. Las matrices comparadas fueron aquellas basadas en: i) la proporción de alelos compartidos por dos individuos (CSIM); ii) las desviaciones del número observado de alelos compartidos por dos individuos respecto del número esperado (CL&H); iii) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método 1 de VanRaden (CVR1); iv) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método 2 de VanRaden (CVR2); v) la matriz de relaciones genómicas obtenida a través el método de Yang (CYAN); y vi) segmentos idénticos por descendencia (CSEG). Los resultados para una sola generación, usando miles de SNP genotipados en individuos de una población cultivada de rodaballo, mostraron grandes diferencias en la magnitud de los seis coeficientes de parentesco. Las correlaciones entre los diferentes coeficientes variaron mucho, siendo las más bajas aquellas entre CSIM, CL&H o CSEG y CVR2 o CYAN. La gestión que utiliza matrices basadas en la proporción de alelos o segmentos compartidos (CSIM, CL&H y CSEG) retuvieron una mayor diversidad que aquella que utiliza matrices de relaciones genómicas (CVR1, CVR2 y CYAN). Como era de esperar, maximizar la heterocigosis llevó los alelos hacia frecuencias intermedias. Sin embargo, alejar las frecuencias alélicas de las frecuencias iniciales puede ser indeseable, ya que se pueden perder adaptaciones particulares al medio. Se utilizaron simulaciones estocásticas para investigar la eficiencia de CL&H y CVR2 en el manejo de poblaciones no divididas a lo largo de 50 generaciones y ambas matrices se compararon tanto en términos de la diversidad genética como en términos de los cambios asociados en las frecuencias alélicas. EL uso de CL&H en el método de Contribuciones Óptimas llevó a una mayor diversidad genética pero también en un mayor cambio de frecuencias alélicas que el uso de CVR2. Las diferencias entre estrategias fueron menores cuando sólo se usaron SNP con una frecuencia del alelo menos común (MAF) por encima de un umbral particular (MAF > 0.05 y MAF > 0.25) para calcular CL&H y CVR2 así como cuando se aplicó el método de Contribuciones Óptimas en poblaciones con censo más pequeños (se pasó de N = 100 a N = 20). La evaluación de CL&H y CVR2 se extendió a poblaciones subdivididas, también a través de simulaciones por ordenador. En poblaciones subdivididas, la diversidad genética se distribuye en dos componentes: dentro y entre subpoblaciones. Cuando se otorga un mayor peso al componente dentro de subpoblaciones, es posible restringir los niveles de consanguinidad. Bajo este escenario, la utilización de CL&H resultó ser la mejor opción para gestionar este tipo de poblaciones, ya que mantuvo una mayor diversidad global, condujo a una menor consanguinidad y a cambios en las frecuencias similares a los observados cuando se utilizó CVR2. [CA] Un objectiu fonamental en els programes de conservació és mantindré la diversitat genètica i l'estratègia de gestió més eficient per aconseguir-ho és aplicar el mètode de contribucions òptimes. Aquest mètode optimitza les contribucions dels candidats a reproductors minimitzant el parentiu global ponderat, cosa que condueix a nivells més alts de diversitat genètica, mesurada com a heterozigosi esperada, i a un control efectiu de l'augment de consanguinitat. El paràmetre fonamental d'aquest mètode és la matriu de parentiu. Aquesta matriu s'ha obtingut tradicionalment a partir del pedigrí, però la disponibilitat actual de genotips per a un gran nombre de polimorfismes d'un sol nucleòtid (SNP) ens permet estimar-la amb més precisió. Tot i això, s'han proposat moltes mesures de parentiu genòmic i es desconeix quina mesura és la més apropiada per minimitzar la pèrdua de diversitat genètica. Per tant, l'objectiu general d'aquesta tesi va ser investigar l'eficiència de diferents matrius genòmiques de parentiu en la gestió de poblacions en programes de conservació, quan s'aplica el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes. Les matrius comparades van ser aquelles basades en: i) la proporció d'al·lels compartits per dos individus (CSIM); ii) les desviacions del nombre observat d'al·lels compartits per dos individus respecte del nombre esperat (CL&H); iii) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode 1 de VanRaden (CVR1); iv) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode 2 de VanRaden (CVR2); v) la matriu de relacions genòmiques obtinguda a través del mètode de Yang (CYAN); i vi) segments idèntics per descendència (CSEG). Els resultats per a una sola generació, usant milers d'SNP genotipats en individus d'una població cultivada de turbot, van mostrar grans diferències en la magnitud dels sis coeficients de parentiu. Les correlacions entre els coeficients van variar molt, sent les més baixes aquelles entre CSIM, CL&H o CSEG i CVR2 o CYAN. La gestió que utilitza matrius basades en la proporció d'al·lels o segments compartits (CSIM, CL&H i CSEG) van retindré una diversitat més gran que aquella que utilitza matrius de relacions genòmiques (CVR1, CVR2 i CYAN). Com calia esperar, la màxima heterozigosi va portar els al·lels cap a freqüències intermèdies. No obstant això, allunyar les freqüències al·lèliques de les freqüències inicials pot ser indesitjable, ja que es poden perdre adaptacions particulars al medi. Es van fer servir simulacions estocàstiques per investigar l'eficiència de CL&H i CVR2 en el maneig de poblacions no dividides al llarg de 50 generacions i les dues matrius es van comparar tant en termes de la diversitat genètica com en termes dels canvis associats a les freqüències al·lèliques. L'ús de CL&H en el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes va resultar en una major diversitat genètica però també en un canvi més gran de freqüències al·lèliques que l'ús de CVR2. Les diferències entre estratègies van ser menors quan només es van fer servir SNP amb una freqüència de l'al·lel menys comú (MAF) per sobre d'un llindar particular (MAF > 0.05 i MAF > 0.25) per calcular CL&H i CVR2 així com quan es va aplicar el mètode de Contribucions Òptimes en poblacions amb cens més petit (es va passar de N = 100 a N = 20). L'avaluació de CL&H i CVR2 es va estendre a poblacions subdividides, també a través de simulacions per ordinador. En poblacions subdividides, la diversitat genètica es distribueix en dos components: dins i entre subpoblacions. Quan s'atorga un pes més gran al component dins de subpoblacions, és possible restringir els nivells de consanguinitat. Sota aquest escenari, la utilització de CL&H va resultar ser la millor opció per gestionar aquest tipus de poblacions, ja que va mantindré una diversitat global més gran, va conduir a una menor consanguinitat i a canvis en les freqüències similars als observats quan es va utilitzar CVR2. [EN] A main objective in conservation programs is to maintain genetic diversity, and the most efficient management strategy to achieve it is to apply the Optimal Contributions method. This method optimizes the contributions of breeding candidates by minimizing the global weighted coancestry. This leads to the highest levels of genetic diversity, when measured as expected heterozygosity, and to an effective control of the increase of inbreeding. The fundamental parameter of the method is the coancestry matrix which, traditionally, has been obtained from pedigree data. The current availability of genome-wide information allows us to estimate coancestries with higher precision. However, many different genomic coancestry measures have been proposed and it is unknown which measure is more efficient to minimize the loss of genetic diversity. Thus, the general aim of this thesis was to investigate the efficiency of different genomic coancestry matrices in the management of conserved populations when the Optimal Contributions method is applied to maximize genetic diversity. The matrices compared were those based on: i) the proportion of shared alleles (CSIM); ii) deviations of the observed number of alleles shared by two individuals from the expected number (CL&H); iii) the realized relationship matrix obtained by VanRaden's method 1 (CVR1); iv) the realized relationship matrix obtained by VanRaden's method 2 (CVR2); v) the realized relationship matrix obtained by Yang¿s method (CYAN); and vi) identical by descent segments (CSEG). Results for a single generation using thousands of SNP genotyped in individuals from a farm turbot population, showed large differences in the magnitude of the six coancestry coefficients. Moreover, pairwise correlations were those between coefficients greatly varied (especially for self-coancestry). The lowest correlations between CSIM, CL&H or CSEG and CVR2 or CYAN. Management with matrices based on the proportion of shared alleles or on segments (CSIM, CL&H and CSEG) retained higher variability than those based on realized genomic relationship matrices (CVR1, CVR2 and CYAN). As expected, maximizing heterozygosity pushed alleles toward intermediate frequencies. However, moving allele frequencies away from initial frequencies may be undesirable as particular adaptations to the environment can be lost. Stochastic simulations were used to investigate the efficiency of CL&H and CVR2 in the management of an undivided population across 50 generations and both matrices were compared not only in terms of the genetic diversity maintained but also in terms of the associated changes in allele frequencies across generations. The use of CL&H in the Optimal Contribution method resulted in a higher genetic diversity but also in a higher change of allele frequencies than the use of CVR2. The differences between strategies were reduced when only SNPs with a minimum allele frequency (MAF) above a particular threshold (MAF > 0.05 and MAF > 0.25) were used to compute CL&H and CVR2 as well as when the Optimal Contributions method was applied in populations of smaller sizes (N = 20 vs N = 100). The evaluation of CL&H and CVR2 was extended to subdivided populations, also via computer simulations. When populations are subdivided into different breeding groups, it is possible to give different weights to the within- and between-subpopulation components of genetic diversity. When a higher weight is given to the within-subpopulation component, the levels of inbreeding can be restricted. In this scenario, the use of CL&H was the best option for managing subdivided populations as it maintained more global diversity, led to less inbreeding and to changes in frequencies similar to those observed when using CVR2 when a large weight was given to the within-subpopulation term.     Authors: Dulce María Arias Lizarraga;

    Authors: Qirui Li;

    Authors: Mandley, Steven james; Faculteit Geowetenschappen;
