This study investigates pedestrian crossing behavior given different roadway centerline features (i.e., undivided, two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL), and median) and various AV operational schemes portrayed to pedestrians through on-vehicle signals (i.e., no signal, yellow negotiating indication, and yellow/blue negotiating/no-yield indications). This study employs virtual reality to simulate an urban unmarked midblock environment where pedestrians interact with AVs. Results demonstrate that both roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling significantly impact pedestrian unmarked midblock crossing behavior, including the waiting time at the curb, waiting time in the middle of the road, and the total crossing time. But only the roadway centerline features significantly impact the walking time. Participants in the undivided scene spent a longer time waiting at the curb and walking on the road than in the median and TWLTL scenes, but they spent a shorter time waiting in the middle. Compared to the AV without a signal, the design of yellow signal significantly reduced pedestrian waiting time at the curb and in the middle. But yellow/blue significantly increased the pedestrian waiting time. Interaction effects between roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling are significant only for waiting time in the middle. For middle waiting time, yellow/blue signals had the most impact on the median road type and the least on the undivided road. Demographics, past behaviors, and walking exposure are also explored. Older individuals tend to wait longer, and pedestrian past crossing behaviors and past walking exposures do not significantly impact pedestrian walking behavior.

However, although it affects our everyday life in a profound way, monitoring indoor noise levels inside workplaces and public buildings has so far grabbed less of our attention. In this work, we report on noise levels data produced by an IoT infrastructure installed inside 5 school buildings in Greece. Our results indicate that such data can help to produce a more accurate picture of the conditions that students and educators experience every day, and also provide useful insights in terms of health risks and aural comfort. Both algorithms utilize a set-based diffusion step, which decreases the estimation errors and the size of estimated sets, and can be seen as a lightweight approach to achieve partial consensus between the distributed estimated sets. Every node shares its measurement with its neighbor in the measurement update step. In the diffusion step, the neighbors intersect their estimated sets using our novel lightweight zonotope intersection technique. Mirlin;Certain fractional quantum Hall edges have been predicted to undergo quantum phase transitions which reduce the number of edge channels and at the same time bind electrons together. However, detailed studies of experimental signatures of such a ``binding transition'' remain lacking. Here, we propose quantum transport signatures with focus on the edge at filling $\nu=9/5$. We demonstrate theoretically that in the regime of non-equilibrated edge transport, the bound and unbound edge phases have distinct conductance and noise characteristics. We also show that for a quantum point contact in the strong back-scattering regime, the bound phase produces a minimum Fano-factor $F_{SBS}=3$ corresponding to three-electron tunneling, whereas single electron tunneling is strongly suppressed at low energies. Together with recent experimental developments, our results will be useful for detecting binding transitions in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Johansson; Matthias Althoff;The set-based estimation has gained a lot of attention due to its ability to guarantee state enclosures for safety-critical systems. However, collecting measurements from distributed sensors often requires outsourcing the set-based operations to an aggregator node, raising many privacy concerns. To address this problem, we present set-based estimation protocols using partially homomorphic encryption that preserve the privacy of the measurements and sets bounding the estimates. We consider a linear discrete-time dynamical system with bounded modeling and measurement uncertainties. Sets are represented by zonotopes and constrained zonotopes as they can compactly represent high-dimensional sets and are closed under linear maps and Minkowski addition. By selectively encrypting parameters of the set representations, we establish the notion of encrypted sets and intersect sets in the encrypted domain, which enables guaranteed state estimation while ensuring privacy. In particular, we show that our protocols achieve computational privacy using the cryptographic notion of computational indistinguishability. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by localizing a real mobile quadcopter using ultra-wideband wireless devices. Comment: This paper is accepted at the European Journal of Control

Gentzmann; Thomas Huthwelker; Caterina Cocchi;The microscopic knowledge of the structural, energetic, and electronic properties of scandium fluoride is still incomplete, despite the relevance of this material as an intermediate for the manufacturing of Al-Sc alloys. In a work based on first-principles calculations and x-ray spectroscopy, we assess the stability and the electronic structure of six computationally predicted ScF$_3$ polymorphs, two of which correspond to experimentally resolved single-crystal phases. In the theoretical analysis based on density-functional theory (DFT), we identify similarities among the polymorphs based on their formation energies, charge-density distribution, and electronic properties (band gaps and density of states). We find striking analogies between the results obtained for the low- and high-temperature phases of the material, indirectly confirming that the transition occurring between them mainly consists of a rigid rotation of the lattice. With this knowledge, we examine the x-ray absorption spectra from the Sc and F K-edge contrasting first-principles results obtained from the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of all-electron DFT with high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection measurements. The analysis of the computational results sheds light on the electronic origin of the absorption maxima and provides information on the prominent excitonic effects that characterize all spectra. Comparison with measurements confirms that the sample is mainly composed of the high- and low-temperature polymorphs of ScF$_3$. However, some fine details in the experimental results suggest that the probed powder sample may contain defects and/or residual traces of metastable polymorphs.

However, the natural choice of Bayesian inference can be computationally heavy when relying on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. When the likelihood of the data is intractable, alternative Bayesian methods have been proposed. Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) only requires sampling from the data generative model, but may be problematic when the dimension of the data is high. 2. We studied alternative strategies to handle high dimensional data in ABC applied to the calibration of a spatially explicit foraging model for \textit{Bombus terrestris}. The first step consisted in building a set of summary statistics carrying enough biological meaning, i.e. as much as the original data, and then applying ABC on this set. Two ABC strategies, the use of regression adjustment leading to the production of ABC posterior samples, and the use of machine learning approaches to approximate ABC posterior quantiles, were compared with respect to coverage of model estimates and true parameter values. The comparison was made on simulated data as well as on data from two field studies. 3. Results from simulated data showed that some model parameters were easier to calibrate than others. Approaches based on random forests in general performed better on simulated data. They also performed well on field data, even though the posterior predictive distribution exhibited a higher variance. Nonlinear regression adjustment performed better than linear ones, and the classical ABC rejection algorithm performed badly. 4. ABC is an interesting and appealing approach for the calibration of complex models in biology, such as spatially explicit foraging models. High Fidelity numerical simulations were made to study various approaches of using Active Flow Control (AFC) actuators to delay flow separation at near stall conditions of the Next Generation Civil Tilt Rotor (NGCTR) VTOL aircraft with a tilted nacelle used during take-off and landing. The study revealed that for this configuration the flow separations travel in the spanwise direction starting from the middle of the wing. Various flow control strategies using Zero Net Mass Flux (ZNMF) actuators (synthetic jets) were then tested. Different number of actuators were integrated on the wing at different positions in order to optimize the effectiveness of these devices. It was found that when placed correctly, using the optimal blowing velocity and actuation frequency, ZNMF devices help to delay flow separation, resulting in a reduction of pressure drag and an increase in the aircraft's aerodynamic efficiency.

Dodds;James Price; Ilkka Keppo; Paul E. Dodds;Swift and deep decarbonisation of electricity generation is central to enabling a timely transition to net-zero emission energy systems. While future power systems will likely be dominated by variable renewable energy (VRE) sources, studies have identified a need for low-carbon dispatchable power such as nuclear. We use a cost-optimising power system model to examine the technoeconomic case for investment in new nuclear capacity in the UK's net-zero emissions energy system and consider four sensitivity dimensions: the capital cost of new nuclear, the availability of competing technologies, the expansion of interconnection and weather conditions. We conclude that new nuclear capacity is only cost-effective if ambitious cost and construction times are assumed, competing technologies are unavailable and interconnector expansion is not permitted. We find that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and long-term storage could reduce electricity system costs by 5–21% and that synchronous condensers can provide cost-effective inertia in highly renewable systems with low amounts of synchronous generation. We show that a nearly 100% variable renewable system with very little fossil fuels, no new build nuclear and facilitated by long-term storage is the most cost-effective system design. Hardware and software build instructions are provided to convert the donor vehicle into a low-cost and fully autonomous platform. The open platform consists of (a) hardware components: CAD designs, bill of materials, and build instructions; (b) Arduino, ROS and Gazebo control and simulation software files which provide standard ROS interfaces and simulation of the vehicle; and (c) higher-level ROS software implementations and configurations of standard robot autonomous planning and control, including the move_base interface with Timed-Elastic-Band planner which enacts commands to drive the vehicle from a current to a desired pose around obstacles. The vehicle is large enough to transport a human passenger or similar load at speeds up to 15km/h, for example for use as a last-mile autonomous taxi service or to transport delivery containers similarly around a city center. It is small and safe enough to be parked in a standard research lab and be used for realistic human-vehicle interaction studies. System build cost from new components is around USD7,000 in total in 2022. OpenPodcar thus provides a good balance between real world utility, safety, cost and research convenience. This study investigates pedestrian crossing behavior given different roadway centerline features (i.e., undivided, two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL), and median) and various AV operational schemes portrayed to pedestrians through on-vehicle signals (i.e., no signal, yellow negotiating indication, and yellow/blue negotiating/no-yield indications). This study employs virtual reality to simulate an urban unmarked midblock environment where pedestrians interact with AVs. Results demonstrate that both roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling significantly impact pedestrian unmarked midblock crossing behavior, including the waiting time at the curb, waiting time in the middle of the road, and the total crossing time. But only the roadway centerline features significantly impact the walking time. Participants in the undivided scene spent a longer time waiting at the curb and walking on the road than in the median and TWLTL scenes, but they spent a shorter time waiting in the middle. Compared to the AV without a signal, the design of yellow signal significantly reduced pedestrian waiting time at the curb and in the middle. But yellow/blue significantly increased the pedestrian waiting time. Interaction effects between roadway centerline design features and AV operations and signaling are significant only for waiting time in the middle. For middle waiting time, yellow/blue signals had the most impact on the median road type and the least on the undivided road. Demographics, past behaviors, and walking exposure are also explored. Older individuals tend to wait longer, and pedestrian past crossing behaviors and past walking exposures do not significantly impact pedestrian walking behavior.

However, although it affects our everyday life in a profound way, monitoring indoor noise levels inside workplaces and public buildings has so far grabbed less of our attention. In this work, we report on noise levels data produced by an IoT infrastructure installed inside 5 school buildings in Greece. Our results indicate that such data can help to produce a more accurate picture of the conditions that students and educators experience every day, and also provide useful insights in terms of health risks and aural comfort. Both algorithms utilize a set-based diffusion step, which decreases the estimation errors and the size of estimated sets, and can be seen as a lightweight approach to achieve partial consensus between the distributed estimated sets. Every node shares its measurement with its neighbor in the measurement update step. In the diffusion step, the neighbors intersect their estimated sets using our novel lightweight zonotope intersection technique. Mirlin;Certain fractional quantum Hall edges have been predicted to undergo quantum phase transitions which reduce the number of edge channels and at the same time bind electrons together. However, detailed studies of experimental signatures of such a ``binding transition'' remain lacking. Here, we propose quantum transport signatures with focus on the edge at filling $\nu=9/5$. We demonstrate theoretically that in the regime of non-equilibrated edge transport, the bound and unbound edge phases have distinct conductance and noise characteristics. We also show that for a quantum point contact in the strong back-scattering regime, the bound phase produces a minimum Fano-factor $F_{SBS}=3$ corresponding to three-electron tunneling, whereas single electron tunneling is strongly suppressed at low energies. Together with recent experimental developments, our results will be useful for detecting binding transitions in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

To address this problem, we present set-based estimation protocols using partially homomorphic encryption that preserve the privacy of the measurements and sets bounding the estimates. We consider a linear discrete-time dynamical system with bounded modeling and measurement uncertainties. Sets are represented by zonotopes and constrained zonotopes as they can compactly represent high-dimensional sets and are closed under linear maps and Minkowski addition. By selectively encrypting parameters of the set representations, we establish the notion of encrypted sets and intersect sets in the encrypted domain, which enables guaranteed state estimation while ensuring privacy. In particular, we show that our protocols achieve computational privacy using the cryptographic notion of computational indistinguishability. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach by localizing a real mobile quadcopter using ultra-wideband wireless devices. Comment: This paper is accepted at the European Journal of Control

Gentzmann; Thomas Huthwelker; Caterina Cocchi;The microscopic knowledge of the structural, energetic, and electronic properties of scandium fluoride is still incomplete, despite the relevance of this material as an intermediate for the manufacturing of Al-Sc alloys. In a work based on first-principles calculations and x-ray spectroscopy, we assess the stability and the electronic structure of six computationally predicted ScF$_3$ polymorphs, two of which correspond to experimentally resolved single-crystal phases. In the theoretical analysis based on density-functional theory (DFT), we identify similarities among the polymorphs based on their formation energies, charge-density distribution, and electronic properties (band gaps and density of states). We find striking analogies between the results obtained for the low- and high-temperature phases of the material, indirectly confirming that the transition occurring between them mainly consists of a rigid rotation of the lattice. With this knowledge, we examine the x-ray absorption spectra from the Sc and F K-edge contrasting first-principles results obtained from the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation on top of all-electron DFT with high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection measurements. The analysis of the computational results sheds light on the electronic origin of the absorption maxima and provides information on the prominent excitonic effects that characterize all spectra. Comparison with measurements confirms that the sample is mainly composed of the high- and low-temperature polymorphs of ScF$_3$. However, some fine details in the experimental results suggest that the probed powder sample may contain defects and/or residual traces of metastable polymorphs.

However, the natural choice of Bayesian inference can be computationally heavy when relying on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. When the likelihood of the data is intractable, alternative Bayesian methods have been proposed. Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) only requires sampling from the data generative model, but may be problematic when the dimension of the data is high. 2. We studied alternative strategies to handle high dimensional data in ABC applied to the calibration of a spatially explicit foraging model for \textit{Bombus terrestris}. The first step consisted in building a set of summary statistics carrying enough biological meaning, i.e. as much as the original data, and then applying ABC on this set. Two ABC strategies, the use of regression adjustment leading to the production of ABC posterior samples, and the use of machine learning approaches to approximate ABC posterior quantiles, were compared with respect to coverage of model estimates and true parameter values. The comparison was made on simulated data as well as on data from two field studies. 3. Results from simulated data showed that some model parameters were easier to calibrate than others. Approaches based on random forests in general performed better on simulated data. They also performed well on field data, even though the posterior predictive distribution exhibited a higher variance. Nonlinear regression adjustment performed better than linear ones, and the classical ABC rejection algorithm performed badly. 4. ABC is an interesting and appealing approach for the calibration of complex models in biology, such as spatially explicit foraging models. High Fidelity numerical simulations were made to study various approaches of using Active Flow Control (AFC) actuators to delay flow separation at near stall conditions of the Next Generation Civil Tilt Rotor (NGCTR) VTOL aircraft with a tilted nacelle used during take-off and landing. The study revealed that for this configuration the flow separations travel in the spanwise direction starting from the middle of the wing. Various flow control strategies using Zero Net Mass Flux (ZNMF) actuators (synthetic jets) were then tested. Different number of actuators were integrated on the wing at different positions in order to optimize the effectiveness of these devices. It was found that when placed correctly, using the optimal blowing velocity and actuation frequency, ZNMF devices help to delay flow separation, resulting in a reduction of pressure drag and an increase in the aircraft's aerodynamic efficiency.

While future power systems will likely be dominated by variable renewable energy (VRE) sources, studies have identified a need for low-carbon dispatchable power such as nuclear. We use a cost-optimising power system model to examine the technoeconomic case for investment in new nuclear capacity in the UK's net-zero emissions energy system and consider four sensitivity dimensions: the capital cost of new nuclear, the availability of competing technologies, the expansion of interconnection and weather conditions. We conclude that new nuclear capacity is only cost-effective if ambitious cost and construction times are assumed, competing technologies are unavailable and interconnector expansion is not permitted. We find that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and long-term storage could reduce electricity system costs by 5–21% and that synchronous condensers can provide cost-effective inertia in highly renewable systems with low amounts of synchronous generation. We show that a nearly 100% variable renewable system with very little fossil fuels, no new build nuclear and facilitated by long-term storage is the most cost-effective system design. Hardware and software build instructions are provided to convert the donor vehicle into a low-cost and fully autonomous platform. The open platform consists of (a) hardware components: CAD designs, bill of materials, and build instructions; (b) Arduino, ROS and Gazebo control and simulation software files which provide standard ROS interfaces and simulation of the vehicle; and (c) higher-level ROS software implementations and configurations of standard robot autonomous planning and control, including the move_base interface with Timed-Elastic-Band planner which enacts commands to drive the vehicle from a current to a desired pose around obstacles. The vehicle is large enough to transport a human passenger or similar load at speeds up to 15km/h, for example for use as a last-mile autonomous taxi service or to transport delivery containers similarly around a city center. It is small and safe enough to be parked in a standard research lab and be used for realistic human-vehicle interaction studies. System build cost from new components is around USD7,000 in total in 2022. OpenPodcar thus provides a good balance between real world utility, safety, cost and research convenience.
