Danish and European farming increasingly depends on external investments due to a surge in farmland prices, capital intensive production facilities and structural development. In response, the land market has been deregulated giving external investors access to ownership of Danish farmland. Based on farming systems theory, this article explores the impacts of this policy reform. We identify four emerging investment rationales: 1) family business, 2) investment object, 3) social and ecological finance and 4) value-chain cooperation. We argue that the emergence of these new investment rationales reflects a fundamental change in financial conditions; today investors are more involved in asset management and use a range of new devises, such as benchmarking tools, farm advisory boards and contracts, to observe the performance of farming systems and to allocate funding. However, changing conditions are also the result of an evolving agri-food sector, which has deliberately pursued a growth strategy characterised by capital intensive mergers and expansion, financed by external investments. For agri-food studies this implies that the boundaries of farming systems are broadened and the individual farmer cannot be the sole entrance to the analysis, but this financialization constitute a new reality that increasingly need to be considered.

Adopting eco-friendly diets will demand the consumption of more plant-based protein food sources such as legumes. However, assessing the impact of such a dietary shift on the dietary and nutritional intake of traditionally omnivorous populations is needed. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of substituting a traditional omnivorous-based lunch for a vegetarian, legume-based meal on the daily dietary and nutritional intake in a group of omnivorous adults in the city of Porto, Portugal. Nineteen, non-vegetarian, healthy young adults consumed a vegetarian, legume-based meal from Monday to Friday, for 8 consecutive weeks. Socio-demographic data, health status, lifestyle-related information and anthropometric parameters were recorded. Three-day food records were used to collect food intake at baseline and week 8. European Food Safety Authority and World Health Organization reference values were used to assess nutritional inadequacies. Variables were described as medians (P-25 and P-75). Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann-Whitney tests were used for statistical comparisons. A p-value of = 80 g/day of legumes). The current dietary intervention did not seem to aggravate the prevalence of nutritional inadequacies for the macro- and micronutrients tested, except for the case of vitamin B-12 (52.6% [95% CI: 28.9-75.6] vs. 78.9% [95% CI: 54.4-94.0]). This could be linked to the reduction of dietary sources of this vitamin which is an expected consequence of vegetarian meals. Dietary changes towards grain legume-based diets are desirable yet need to be carefully implemented to prevent exacerbating potential nutrient inadequacies, especially of vitamin B-12. The purpose of this work is to analyze the differences in profitability between European aquaculture firms of the Nordic and Mediterranean-EU regions, as well as the factors that are relevant to explain these differences. In addition to traditional factors proposed by theory to explain profitability differences among firms such as size, efficiency, or capital structure, we also include in this analysis the strategies of product differentiation and diversification through vertical integration. A sample of aquaculture firms of the Nordic and Mediterranean-EU regions that were operating over the 2012?2019 period are identified in the Orbis database and selected for this research, employing an unbalanced panel made up of 5,427 observations. To carry out this analysis, we propose a random-effects model of firm profitability that allows to test the effect of the different explanatory variables as well as their regional differences. The findings of this research support that Nordic and Mediterranean-EU aquaculture are two business models with different characteristics, what is reflected in the economic performance of their firms. This study was carried out with the financial support of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research Program, Grant Agreement [635188], SUCCESS (Strategic Use of Competitiveness toward Consolidating the Economic Sustainability of the European Seafood sector).

Intercropping increases resource capture due to species complementarities, but it is not clear to which extent intercropping also affects the redistribution of carbohydrates and nitrogen (N) within the plant. Here, we examined in two years field experimentation the accumulation and translocation of dry matter and N in maize and peanut in pure stands and intercrops at five N input levels. Post-anthesis dry matter accumulation in the cob was on average 117 g plant−1 in sole maize and 159 g plant−1 in intercropped maize, of which post-anthesis dry matter translocation contributed 9 and 19 g plant−1, respectively. Intercropping increased post-anthesis N accumulation of maize from 0.77 to 1.29 g N plant−1 and N translocation to cobs from 0.94 to 1.16 g N plant−1, but it decreased the contribution of post-anthesis N translocation to grain from 54.0% in sole maize to 46.9% in intercropped maize. The kernel number was 486 per cob in sole maize and 609 per cob in intercropped maize, and the thousand-kernel weight was 320 g and 336 g, respectively. In peanut, intercropping decreased post-anthesis dry matter accumulation from 14.8 to 9.4 g plant−1, post-anthesis N accumulation from 0.37 to 0.24 g N plant−1 and N translocation to the pods from 0.25 to 0.14 g N plant−1. The pod number per plant in peanut decreased from 10.6 in the sole crop to 8.6 in intercropping. Nitrogen fertilization increased dry matter accumulation and translocation in intercropped maize, but had little impact in sole maize or in sole or intercropped peanut. In both species, dry matter translocation to the reproductive organs contributed slightly to the yield, while the post-anthesis contribution of N translocation was of the same order of magnitude as that of N uptake.

Xylella fastidiosa is the causal agent of important crop diseases and is transmitted by xylem-sap-feeding insects. The bacterium colonizes xylem vessels and can persist with a commensal or pathogen lifestyle in more than 500 plant species. In the past decade, reports of X. fastidiosa across the globe have dramatically increased its known occurrence. This raises important questions: How does X. fastidiosa interact with the different host plants? How does the bacterium interact with the plant immune system? How does it influence the host's microbiome? We discuss recent strain genetic typing and plant transcriptome and microbiome analyses, which have advanced our understanding of factors that are important for X. fastidiosa plant infection. This research was supported by European Research Council (SR) grant MultiX (884235), by European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 727987 XF-ACTORS, and the PTI Sol-Xyl on X. fastidiosa from CSIC. Monospecific pine forests are widespread due to extensive afforestation efforts and natural colonization of abandoned croplands in the Mediterranean Basin. It was originally thought that pines would facilitate the natural colonization of native late-successional resprouter species (e.g., hardwoods), but these species can be compromised if competition with pines outweighs their facilitative effect on these hardwood species. Managing the density or canopy cover of these widespread pine forests can potentially provide some “optimum” balance between facilitation and competition to maximize success in the introduction of late successional species while maintaining a tree stratum. We tested the response (survival and growth across 10 years) of six resprouter species covering a wide range of plant functional strategies, from drought-tolerant sclerophyllous shrubs and trees to malacophyllous drought-sensitive trees, across an experimental gradient of Aleppo pine canopy cover. Seedling performance varied according to the functional strategy, pine cover and time. High pine cover generally enhanced seedling survival, whereas moderate pine cover generally enhanced seedling growth, although this response was modulated by the functional strategy of the seedling species. Interactions between pines and seedlings were only detectable 2–3 years after plantation, increasing in intensity with time. The latter highlights the need of medium to long-term studies to evaluate plant-plant interactions in these water-limited environments with slow successional trajectories. Our results could be attributed to the shade tolerance of most of the introduced trees, combined with their low tolerance to the combination of high sunlight radiation and drought. We found an optimal pine cover of ca. 50% (equivalent to 300–400 trees/ha) in which both survival and growth of late successional species can be maximized, which help to select best locations for more efficient reforestation programs and set a threshold value to decide whether or not to perform tree thinning to enhance ecosystem diversity and, subsequently, resilience. The study was funded by the FUME (EU FP7-Environment, GA. 243888), SURVIVE-2 (CGL2015-69773-C2-2-P MINECO/FEDER) and INERTIA (PID2019-111332RB-C22) projects, from the Spanish Government and IMAGINA project (PROMETEU/2019/110) from Generalitat Valenciana.

L.M. was supported by the Spanish MICINN (PTA2019-018094). S.S. was supported by the Ramón y Cajal fellowship (RYC-2016-20604) and the FOBIASS project (RTI2018-098895-A-100), both from the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
